Microsoft Refuses To Say Whether or Not New Xbox 360 Heat Sinks are Permanent

Earlier in the week we noticed that Microsoft had started installing additional heat sinks into Xbox 360s that were sent in for repair. This was done to eliminate “red lights of death” and other problems that plague the system. Yet we didn’t know, and still don’t know, whether or not the additional heat sinks are part of a new hardware revision or are installed on a case-by-case basis. Says Redmond:

Regularly updating console components is commonplace within the industry and is a standard aspect of the business for a variety of reasons including cost reduction, improved manufacturability and improved performance. We do not provide details on these updates

So… yeah, that’s some White House-delivering-bad-news-on-a-Friday-afternoon business. No confirmation, no denial, just “yeah, we revise systems… maybe.” What’s the big deal here, Microsoft? Is there a new hardware revision or isn’t there?

  • Gamers who sent in 360s to be repaired in JUNE 2007, Are getting them back with NO NEW HEAT SINK.

You can read more about this on http://www.xbox360defective.com and in the xbox forums http://www.box.com

    Hope this sheds some light.
QUOTE FROM ONE FORUM MEMBE, 360 OWNER:
UPS just dropped off my Refurb. I know it’s a refurb because the manufacturing date is not the same as the original I sent them, it’s actually older by a few days. Anyway to my dismay NO heatsink!! And I know what I’m looking for as I worked as an electronic engineer for a major telecom company! I live in the US, I am just wondering if anyone else in the US that sent their 360 in for repair in June, got shafted on this supposed heatsink. I am starting to think it’s all BS.

Also, did you know, the ELITE has the same defective heat sink, and break down prone DVD drive as the 360? Look at the video a short way down the page of my site.

  • I have a Elite made June 28th 2007 and it HAS the new 2nd Heatsink and its not THAT hard to find/ Take a flashlite shine it into the vents on the other side than the hard drive. Look inside and if you CAN see all the way to the disc drive you don’t have a new heatsink. If its blocked by another metal Box with a gold nob it looks like on it then You have that second NEW HEATSINK. I have the new Heatsink and I found out this little spy deal researching about it like I’m still doing. So far my 360 has been fine knock in wood though!!
