Inkjet Printers Claim to be Out of Ink – Not Really

According to a study by TÜV Rheinland, inkjet owners are taking the advice of their printers, throwing out cartridges when the printer says they’re empty. The problem? They aren’t really empty. In fact, the cartridges are over half full when thrown out, and may still have hundreds of pages worth of ink left. I personally run my ink supply into the ground, printing until my pages are streaky and faded. If you use this method, always have some new cartridges in supply.

How do I get these printers (particularly the Kodak EasyShare 5300) to keep using the same ink cartridges until they are really empty? My experience has been that the printer somehow “marks” the cartridge and the printer won’t continue to use the “empty” cartridge. I see a couple electrical contacts on the back of the Kodak cartridges — does it burn some internal “fuse” to mark the cartridge “empty”? Is there some way to reset or restore it so I can continue to use the cartridge until it is actually empty?
Thanks!
