well if anyone read some information on the new macbooks you'ed know that they're predicted to be announced around oct 14. they think they'll be smaller, faster processor, plus some tech they've used on the iphone. and i've heard they'll use an aluminum cover like that of the air and the pro. so ... i think it'll be a substantial upgrade. i'm waiting ...

I'm gonna call BS on this. Why (and how?) on earth would Apple make the MB half the thickness, use new material but the SAME innards? Is there just a lot of free space floating around in the MB already?

And the "back to school" time is pretty much over now. There is no point on refreshing the MB specifically for education now...

sheeez, so this means i have to wait for another month? god! I really want one now. But then again, I should wait for the leopard. surely there will be a new one in october. they just released the new iMac and the new iPod and a new MacBook is just there.

Self control... i am really tempted to get one now...

well, I think is all humbug. There's no way they can cram that many components into a notebook. In order to get storage space, they would have to use ssd drives (which are way to expensive and small). Second, they would do away with the optical drive, since optical drives only get as slim as 9.5 mm. Honestly, half the size would be worse, if the macbook has so many issues with heat dissipation as is, i can't imagine how bad it will be later. maybe they'll slightly reduce thickness by employing led backlit displays, but half the size seems completely out of the question, i mean, that would be like 0.55 inches thick. What kind of key travel would u have in that?
Here's what I think will happen, apple will just drop santa rosa into the mb's ad add an led backlit display maybe. I would definately welcome better build quality, but i doubt apple with make the investment for that.

Half the thickness does sound like quite the achievement. I have an older MacBook Pro and I think it's pretty slim, but it runs very hot and I don't dare leave it on my lap without protection. I wonder how heat dissipation will be handled on these even-thinner models-to-come.

September/October as Back to School. Think again. Back to school season is late July into August. Most schools have started by the first, or second week in September. That's like saying the time between Christmas and New Years is the Christmas season. There's a reason the Christmas season starts right after Thanksgiving!

I agree with you, Yoshi. But if Apple miraculously slims down the MacBook and shaves some weight off of it, I'd rather wait till fall because I don't need a new notebook at this moment. However, if it was a matter of "I need a computer now," then yes, it is a losing battle.

I'm sorry but waiting for the next few months for the "latest and greatest" is a losing battle. Tech is always changing. Define you requirements, set a budget, and buy whatever is on the market at that time that meets those requirements.

So the MacBook will be down to a half an inch thickness with the "same" hardware inside? And that's the only change, that's good news for me. I think I'd be better off getting a mac before the Major in Mac promo is over instead of waiting for a smaller 'book.
