It looks like the WWDC beta of Leopard was leaked onto the Oink BitTorrent Web site. (I’m not about to download it, though, that’s for sure.) Here’s a screen shot. And another. And another. That last one made me laugh. Oops!
Nobody’s completely downloaded the 6GB file yet, but the site’s forum is red hot with activity and the file already has 205 comments. Choice lines about the leak in recent days have included “this is f*#$ing ridiculous. i want leopard, and i want it now. hurry, before some heads start to roll” and “Please do not talk about this torrent file outside of OINK.”
Someone should notify Apple.
I must say, those screenshots were rather unnecessary, and even mentioning the name of OiNK. It’s a private tracker for a reason, let’s keep it that way.
OiNK is shit anyway. One of the worst trackers around. Yeah, it gets lots of stuff but it’s badly managed and the staff are arrogant beyond belief.
As for the posters bitching about it being taken away. What the hell people? You want someones mother raped and killed because you can’t download a Beta OS? It’s not like it would’ve been a secret longer than, say, a day, when it would be posted on all the public servers. You can hide all you want on the internet, but just so you know, websites log your IP – if they had wanted to, they could just give it to the authorities. The internet is far from being protected – it would be easy to find out who you are. I don’t really think the point is that he posted about it in general, or that it got taken down, I think most OiNKers just think it’s disgusting to get ratted out by “one of their own”. I mean, for someone outside of OiNK to somehow find out and report about it is one thing, but to know that someone who takes full advantage of the community can just turn around and stab it in the back by basically risking it get shut down (and suggesting to bring it legal troubles by contacting Apple) is plain disgusting. Oink is a private tracker, please keep it that way. Relatively simple. I’m not going to insult anyone in particular for doing otherwise, but it’s honestly bad form overall. I don’t feel an incessant pull to place police for other people — I have a drain on my taxes attempting to that for me, anyway.
The problem with any reporting from file-sharing is that it all heavily violates right of privacy laws. Litigation wins because fourteen year old kids and their parents get scared shitless and settle, when the case that would be brought against them would constitute such a huge invasion of privacy it’d be almost laughable in court.
The “someone should notify Apple” bit is hilarious. What are they going to do? Attempt to press charges? As soon as the file touches the internet, it’s there forever. We all saw the attempted suppression of that number sequence a few weeks ago. All they’d do is waste a lot of money on legal fees and the like, and they’re not going to stop the leak.
No one’s going to bust OiNK, anyway. Law enforcement agencies and the lawyers of various companies have hundreds of public trackers they can skim anyday they want, just filled with little kids downloading Linkin Park whose parents they can intimidate into handing over tens of thousands.

Private trackers don’t get shut down. They’re too much of a hassle to take down. Remember when the Pirate Bay’s servers were raided? What was the end result? Nothing. It’s much easier to just target the public trackers and P2P networks like LimeWire.

Two things. First of all, you know nothing about OiNK. “They should have stopped handing out invites years ago”. OiNK has only been operating for 3 years. Not to mention, it hasn’t been invite-only for that long. So stop talking out of your ass, because if you can’t even know that, you certainly wouldn’t know a THING about their server bills.
Second of all..you basically are saying OiNK makes a profit from people. You surely realize that donations are voluntary, right? You don’t have to donate, lots of people do not. Those who do, can afford to. And you know, even if they donated 10 bucks a month, that’s not even the cost of ONE CD. 10 bucks a month for all the music and programs you want? Tell me exactly how that’s a rip-off, or a waste of time?
I think someone’s just bitter they got banned. We’ve had spies on that site for ages. We’re all aware of their presence, and none of us care. I bet they enjoy the free music too cause they’ve never tried to shut it down. Heh.
As a final thought, yes OiNK is a pretty large private tracker. But it’s still a private tracker. When you join, you have to accept to a terms and agreement that basically state that you can’t use anything you see while at OiNK against them. So even if Steve Jobs himself got an invite to OiNK (hard to believe he isn’t already a member..), then he couldn’t use anything he sees on OiNK in court, because anything becomes null as soon as he clicks the “I Agree” button. I know you’re probably not very bright, but, if you’re going to make stupid threats like that, you should at least know the logistics behind what you’re saying.
Public trackers are extremely vulnerable. Private trackers aren’t, and size is completely irrelevant (I bet you that’s the only time you’ll ever hear that in your life).
Oh and one more thing while I’m at it: THIS IS A BETA, FOLKS. You’re basically doing Apple a favor by testing it out, and I’m sure they’re happy about that. If this were a full release it would be a different story, although some rumors say that the upgrade will be free, anyhow. So I’m not sure what you’re all going crazy over.

Obviously when you release something to a few thousand people, it’s going to get leaked beyond just those people. Exposing OiNK is just as bad as leaking a beta, except I see it as more morally reprehensible. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it’s not.
Well you know with the invite system, since we get tons, I’ve multiplied myself 2 fold to arouns 70-80 accounts, of course all using different ips, emails, spread across the world. OK I’ll take back my comment about the server bills, but I challenge you to ask the admins to show you their monthly expenses versus the monthly flow of the paypal account they have. They can block out all personal information, of course. Don’t you want to know where your money goes? I’d never give a homeless man any money because I don’t know what he’s going to do with it, but I’ll surely give my leftovers in a heartbeat. And for the terms and conditions, is that even applicable here? To me that’s sounds like an illegal agreement. Size does matter, ever heard of the expression don’t carry all your eggs in one basket? Unless you paid for an ADC membership, or a ticket for WWDC, you should not have a copy of Leopard. You’re using stolen software, and Apple *will* bust you for it. Not to mention, you’re using extremely unstable software that’s not meant for everyday use.
Apple wants people who know how to test and debug software properly to be using this, and submitting bug reports to Apple. Little script kiddies like you can’t do that, so you’re not helping, and then you post “Oh NOES!!1!! Mac Leopard not workingsz!!!1!!” to message boards, which makes Apple look bad. Apple has every right to protect their intellectual property as they see fit. And if you were the person who posted the disk image, I hope for your sake that Apple picks decapitation rather than crucifixion for your execution – I hear it doesn’t hurt as much when Mr. Jobs pulls the cord.
