First iPhone Review Spotted: Wait for Next Year’s Model?

The New York Post, by way of Matt Drudge, has perhaps the first review of the iPhone online. It’s certainly the first one I’ve seen. Big shock: the guy doesn’t really like it. He does, but it’s one of those qualified, “it’s good, but…” reviews that you could’ve written yourself two months ago. The reviewer, a certain Glenn Fleishmann, calls it a “technical marvel,” but then cautions that you should wait for next year’s model.
The guy pans the screen size (it “has a very small screen compared to even the tiniest laptop”) even though he should be comparing the size to other cellphones and not laptops. Perhaps he should say it’s not as big as his TV?
The dude also slams the small storage capacity, its lack of 3G support and its high price.
But it’s a fine iPod, he says.
I guess the New York Post will hire just about anyone these days. What a useless review.

I hope more people read that - so at least I’ll stand a chance to get one….

It does seem ridiculous to compare the screen-size of a phone to the screen-size of a laptop. I think the reviewer’s less-than-credible point might have been that this phone, purporting to display web pages the way you would see them on any regular ‘ol computer, does not have the screen size to effectively support that function. And that was the only useful thing he *almost* said in the whole review.

I guess you did not bother to check whether this was a review of the iPhone (such as WSJ, NYT, Newsweek and USA today publish having been blessed with review models) or just a first impression based on 20 min experience with the January preview model shown at macworld. Congratulations.

I am starting to think the press is afraid to say any thing good about the iPhone for fear they will be considered Apple Lap Dogs. What ever When I get one I can see how well it works for me.

Oh Im so sorry for the mactards that don’t actually want a fair review.
The one thing I agree was stupid was comparing it to a laptop screen.
But with all it’s features, the main points where it suffered were EMAIL and WEBPAGE DOWNLOADS.
I think Apple should be sued for misrepresenting the ipod on TV. The webpages, google maps, etc… take forever to download and are no where close to what they show on TV, even when connected to Wi-fi.
FACTS:
1- It lacks a tactile keyboard
2- very slow network
3- no flash which prevents it from viewing many sites.
4- no removable battery— still waiting on reviews on the ACTUAL time it takes to drain the battery.
5- No GPS
6- No push email for enterprise email
7- Simple camera, is there a zoom or a flash ?
8- No memory slots for swapping out memory cards
9- Dinky applications because it will only run webapps and crippled as that because it does not support the SDK pack.
Those are FACTS.
Take what you want from that, but present smart phones can do all these things. I totally think Sprint’s HTC Mogul is heads and shoulders above the iphone!
The things that iphone DOES have thats are unique:
1-innovative interface,
2-”pinching”
3- Nice MP3 player interface.
– THATS ALL
If that is innovation then Mactards are shown for what they really are - wanters of fashion, not function!
