Late last night some AT&T geeks started benchmarking their network speed. Suddenly, after months of sub-standard EDGE speeds, they noticed 200+kbps during most trials, suggesting that someone out there has been tweaking things to make iPhone browsing a little less like pulling teeth.

Folks at Howard Forums are saying:

Maybe you’re seeing that $50,000,000 they invested into their data network handling capabilities specifically for the iPhone launch? You’d think it would have been a steady upgrade, but it actually makes more sense that they’d bring on extra routers / equipment and bandwidth based on a deadlike (ie. the phone’s launch.) It’s not like they needed it before.

It appears this is a direct result of AT&T “Fine Edge” improvements reported a few weeks ago.
