Bloops! First Anti-iPhone Rants Rolling In

After months of hype and our own iPhone Love Parade AKA last Friday night, the first iPhonian complaints are starting to hit our tips box. First up, Mike:

Hello and good afternoon, I just thought you might find it interesting that on the day after one of their biggest product releases Apple has decided to make unavailable their entire technical support department. I was wondering why they chose to debut the phone on a Friday at 6:00pm. It seems painfully obviously to me now.

I am having all kinds of problems with my Iphone (mostly with activation, details below) and tried to call Apple technical support to at leaset get the thing to some sort of usable state. As you know the phone is totally worthless without activation. This sting of all this would be a little less painful if I could at least use the Ipod part of the device. When I called, the automated message informed me that “no technicians were available at this time” and to call back later. No, please hold for an available technician….. no, please leave a message and one of our technicians will get back with you……just, call back later (AKA: we have your money now go F yourself). This is my first ever purchase of an Apple product and I could not be more dissatisfied. It just blows me away that they have been planning this for so long, were fully aware of the response they were going to get and were still totally unprepared to handle the situation. Below I have listed my experience with AT&T’s “Customer Care”. Just to give you the full affect of my excellent Iphone experience. I now am the proud owner of a $640.93 brick (not including all the costs associated with the service). Awesome…….enjoy the read.

This is an excerpt of a complaint I have filed with the BBB againt AT&T:

I purchased the new Apple Iphone and tried to activate my service with AT&T via their online software. All the documentation and videos about the activation part of the service led me to believe that it was fast and simple. This was a very large part of the reason I made the decision to change my service. After going through the online steps for activation I was notified via e-mail that it would take some time to move my existing phone number from Sprint over to AT&T and at that time I would be able to activate the phone. It is important to note that none of the features of the Iphone will work at all until the activation is complete. It is completly useless until your activate the product. After several hours (basically overnight) AT&T ported over my existing phone number from Sprint to the AT&T system but would/could not activate the phone. So now my old phone service no longer works and my new phone service does not work either. I contacted “Customer Care” to get the problem rectified. After approx 1.5 hours on the phone they told me they could not get my service activated. Neither of my phones would now not work for inbound or outbound calls. I was frustrated by this but thought that if they would refund the activation fee I could overlook the inconvenience because it was the weekend and my customers were not likely to call me. As a result of this inconvenience I asked them to refund me the $39.00 (approx) activation fee since they failed to activate my service and now I was without a phone. The Customer Care Manager told me I had not been charged yet but that when I got charged it would be impossible to refund the money for the activation. I asked him if they would be able to credit my account the amount of the activation fee since they had failed to activate my phone in a timely manner and that I would be without a phone for almost a whole day. He told me that many people were having this problem and that they were not able to refund the fee for anyone. I explained to the Customer Service Manager that it would be possible to refund the activation fee (it is always possible to refund money) but that they were choosing (a conscience choice) not to do it. There is a very big difference between not being able to do something and not wanting to do something. He then repeated they could not refund the activation fee ignoring what I had said. I then asked who else I could talk to about getting a refund or credit and he told me there was no one else I could talk to. I then asked him who I needed to call to file a complaint. He told me there was no other number to call to file a complaint. He was basically telling me that there was no action I could take to turn this negative experience into a more posive experience. After several minutes of trying to get some kind of information from him I realized that I had no other action except to file a complaint with the BBB. I tried to settle my issue with AT&T directly but they were uncooperative, hence I am here filing this complaint.

Consumer’s Desired Resolution:

I am asking that the activation fee of $39.00 (approx) be refunded or not charged to my account.

  • ipod? shmopod? My present cell phone works like a charm and it’s so old it has rotary dial. I’ll wait for 1pod3.

  • hey stayedaway

u want the iphone without the phone it is very very easy.. lik ei found out.. thanks to the ridiculous activation process i am going through. you can activate the phone on itunes (worked fine first time) and then discontinue at&t srvice, everything works except thephone and sms. everything including ipod, web browsing (using wi-fi) and maps everything !!! so i called apple to ask if thats how it should be and the guy at the other end actually answered, “i cannot give you the answer to that question.”!! So i askd if there was anyone who could answer it and after giving me totally unrelated answers three times, he finally said i can speak with a product specialist. so i said – “connect me!!”. but he had a stonewall answer for that too .. “its a one hour wait!”. Now i didnt need to wait n hour to hear what i had already found out, or a lie that it cannot be done.

Anyway, u can have an iphone and not have a two year contract with att etc and still have everything else. my phone is still not activated (i need to take it to the local store, which i already did, and they said they have no been trained on activating or doing anything with it.) so while i wait, i use my browser, maps ipod etc untill apple decides to clamp it down!!

  • Will see what happens six months from now when all Apple supporters realize that an iPhone is just another well “PHONE”. Get a life idiots.

  • I think it’s not apples fault (well, a little). it’s AT&T fault. choosing AT&T as their carrier wasn’t a very wise decision!

  • By the time you did all that complaining to AT&T if you had just gone to the gym for an hour it would have been activated. I got the same email as you and I also did not have a phone for a bit. I didn’t flip out, i assumed that it was because everyone was tryign to sign up at once. I wnet to the gym and byt he time I got home at 10 it was ready to be activated. I went 3 hours without a cellphone OH NO! I lived. And my iphone has been 100% worth the money i paid. Apple has some really smart people workign for them who are making them a lot of money.

  • I purchased my phone at 6:30 pm on Friday the 29th. The AT&T customer service was EXCELLENT at the Portland, Oregon store we went to. My friend and I brought our new phones home and activated them both one after the other. No problems. Very easy. I understand the frustration people are having when they didn’t enjoy the sweet experience we did. Some people just aren’t as lucky. YMMV.

  • just kicked crunchgear out of my rss subscriptions since reading any post requires clicking through to the web site, thereby wasting my time.

  • sounds like a number porting issue on Sprint’s end…

  • Remember, Apple didn’t choose AT&T. Apple chose Cingular. I fled AT&T to go to Cingular. AT&T bought Cingular to get me back as a client. Its the only logical explanation.

  • I don’t like AT&T either but it’s obvious why Apple went with them. They own a good portion of the market space when it comes to mobile phones. So in reality not a lot of people would have to make the “switch” compared to those that just needed to renew their 2 year agreement and activate their phone. I don’t hate Apple nor do I really want an iphone at this time. I consider myself pretty up to date on technology but I’ll wait until the kinks are worked out or a better edition is released that has some of those missing features that I yearn for. Who knows though maybe when I get my hands on one it might change my mind because I’m all about cool new features. Right now I’m looking at the Nokia N95 and feature to feature it’s schooling the iphone except it doesn’t have touch screen access. In the end though I never liked my old Nokia phones so we will have to see.

  • I manage an extremely large corporate cell account with ATT and I have ported several lines from Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile & Alltel into ATT. It’s been my experience that a port takes a minimum of 24 – 48 hrs to complete…sometimes longer depending on the cell provider your a porting from…

  • I was one of the people who waited in line for an iPhone. I nearly got in a fight with an arrogant jerk, I got soaked in a rainstorm, and I nearly soiled myself due to the lack of nearby public restrooms. After all of that, I’m glad I waited. I’m thrilled with my new toy. Activation was a snap, in fact it took me longer to drive home than it did to activate my phone. I totally bought into the hype, but then again, when I got my iPod a few years ago my first comment was “Apple needs to make a cell phone!” A few years later here we are. The added cost on my cell phone bill is kinda like a poke in the butt, but I’m not going to complain. I really really really like this device. I can see how people would be put off by the whole thing though… it’s an expensive phone, it doesn’t have as much storage as the standard iPods, it’s the first generation, there is an added cost on your cell phone bill, it doesn’t have a replacable battery, the web surfing isn’t as fast as a real computer, blah blah blah. Big freaking deal.
Bottom line– the iPhone is a sweet little device that has exceeded my expectations. My wife was of the ‘who really cares’ mindset, and after playing with it she now wants to upgrade to the iPhone too.
If you don’t like the iPhone or Apple or the monetary cost of the device and service, dont get one. It’s just that simple. There is nothing positive or constructive about talking down about a product without having actually used said product.

  • What kind of dumbass pays 640 dollars for a fucking phone? Have we become that desperate?

  • Arghhhhhhhhhh! So many replies, so much lunacy. Where to start?

The iPhone is not 3G – So what? Of the 53,000+ cities served by the cellular industry, 3G service is only offered in 160 cities. Until the industry expands the number of cities that offer 3G, the EDGE network has the largest coverage in the nation.

What may be the most revolutionary thing about the iPhone is the new relationship that Apple has created with AT&T. Up until this point, handset manufacturers made the hardware under direct supervision of the cellular carriers. If the carriers said they would not provide say, WiFi support for a particular handset, then the manufacturer removed that feature from the handset. The carrier then purchased the phones from the manufacturers (at a steep discount) and sold them to their users. The carriers could then charge whatever they liked for the phone and added those costs to the end user contact. Absolutely no room for innovation. The Apple/AT&T deal basically said, ‘Apple will build the hardware, software, and integration of the phone and AT&T will provide the network. The customers purchase the phones from Apple or AT&T stores. No subsidization. Plenty of room for both Apple and AT&T to innovate their respective products.

Why did Apple choose AT&T – Because Verizon turned them down AND AT&T in it’s effort to rebrand Cingular was willing to innovate. Basically Apple and AT&T changed the rules of the game. And that scares the bejezus out of the cell phone industry.

Battery – You can’t remove it. Why does this matter? When was the last time you had to remove a dead battery from your cell phone? In all the years I’ve had a cell, I’ve never had to change the battery. Somehow I’ve always seemed to be able to manage with 8 hours of talk time daily (and many hours more of standby)

The service costs too much – Yeah, right! have you seen what the other guys charge for 450 minutes, unlimited data and e-mail, 200 SMS text messages, unlimited mobile-to mobile, and rollover minutes? Strangely enough, about $60 month…the same as AT&T.

The iPhone is certainly not perfect but it is better than 90% of what’s being foisted on the US cellular phone buying public. Will the iPhone (and AT&T) get better. You betcha! There’s plenty of room for improvement and innovation.
Will the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) unleashed by seriously challenged anti-Apple, anti-AT&T, anti-cell phone, technophobes cease? Not until another star rises in the east.

  • We are gonna be bombarded with negative press about the iPhone for awhile. When something is considered so revolutionary and gets worldwide praise and press, the only news stories left are those saying how bad it really is, and how its a collosal failure.

A friend got one and I played with it Friday night. (Im not an early adopter because the next few iterations will be even better. no hurry).

First of all its much smaler than it looks in ads, and very thin.
The screen is amazingly clear and detailed.
YouTube movies play easily and impressively. iPhone can replace portable DVD players (only after buying/downloading the films first though…)
Basically all the features work well.
Except, dont bother trying to surf the internet over ATTs phone network. Its not so mi=uch that the 2G is too slow, 3G will be faster but it STILL wont blow anyonbes with broadband access ’s socks off. Wee are too spolied with speed now.

The iPhone’s internet screams along on WiFi networks. Sitting at home running wireless is the only way to use it- – - and this is the only tiny device that can do it! And make calls, and play your music.

So its not perfect. What is?

heres one more observation: play with the iPhone for 5 minutes then reach into your pocket for your silver buttoned OLD phone. Hold them next to each other and TRY to convince yourself that 1) iPhone isnt a revolutionary breakthru product and 2) that your OLD phone doesnt look like the old calculators you find in the back of a drawer every now and then. You will shudder to be holding the old thing.

  • Stayed away, your post contains a lot of misconception and false understandings that It would take me a lot of posts to point them all out.

    I’ll start with this one:

The idea of making a call is an after-thought. Listen to the commercials. The call feature is tacked onto the end and they actually hope you really don’t need to make that call.

The reason why is it’s “tacked” at the end of the commercials is just the exact opposite of what you’re trying to imply. It’s there to actually emphasize the phone part of the iPhone. It’s an artistic style on the part of the ones who produced and directed the commercial to EMPHASIZE that “on top of all the things that we’re saying the iPhone can do, it is ultimately a PHONE”. It’s something like Steve Job’s “one more thing” (though I am not making an assertion that the commercial was designed similarly because of job’s knack for that “one more thing”).

To add more to my point that the commercials were arranged to emphasize the Phone part (and not put it in the back seat as what you’re so convinced about) is this: Which part of the ads did stick the most to you? The phone part is in the last part of the ad because it was meant to be the last thing that people will see before the commercial ends (and thus becomes the stickies part).

  • Until I can choose the carrier, I’m not buying one. Plain and simple

  • What else did you expect from AT&T/Cingular ? Their service is horrible.

  • Hmmm…IPhone, plays songs. So does my Sync from Samsung. It’s a phone on the AT&T Network. So is my Sync. My Sync get the internet and has Bluetooth. Oh the Iphone does that to. Let’s see, video. I can’t play full movies but guess what? It’s a phone! Quad band, got it. Edge, got it. USB, got. I have expandable memory and the IPhone is stuck at either 4 or 8GB. Pretty comparable right? One my thing…the Sync was $80 and I’m getting a $50 rebate. Sucker!!!

  • Just an observation about these posts: Have you noticed that the positive reviews are mostly from those who ACTUALLY own iPhones (and know what they’re talking about)? …and the negative reviews are mostly from those who don’t have one (and don’t know what they’re talking about)?

  • Did not buy one because..I never buy new stuff.

But my boss did. 8 iPhones. He took me and another three guys from the office to stand in line so each could get the 2 per person allowed. Yes, the guy is very wealthy. An like most wealthy people, they get their minions to do their dirty work, which in this case was activating all 8 iPhones, which was my task yesterday. 6 were already in Cingular, so each took about 5 to 10 minutes to activate. No problems.

The other two were Sprint and Verizon, and like most psychopath corporations, they seem to be going out of their way to “retain” customers by frustrating the transfer process. Typical good old fashion US economics: FUD all the time.

As for the iPhone = Same thing that happened with the iPod. The haters will hate, the doubters will doubt, the fanatics will get their employees to stand in line to buy 8 and the rest of us….We’ll be buying one in about a year or two when it is kicking ass and taken over the market like the iPod.

    And that is that.

“Just an observation about these posts: Have you noticed that the positive reviews are mostly from those who ACTUALLY own iPhones (and know what they’re talking about)? …and the negative reviews are mostly from those who don’t have one (and don’t know what they’re talking about)?”

Totally agree with you George!!!! I brought an iPhone and I got to admit at first I was having a little issues with the activiation process and made a call to technical support who then helped me and said it is mostly a system clock issue on my computer and after checking the options for my system clock by changing it to windows server instead, I figured this out before they did and then they eventually told me what to do. It was a seamless transisition if you have patience. At the time of activiation you and 20,000 other people was trying to do the same thing. What the hell did you expect. Everyone I know envy me and my phone and it’s obvious the people here that don’t have any is doing the same. Get a dam life you losers.

  • retard. bitch at att. smells like microtard to me. what’s apple have to do with the fact that your phone is not activated? if you buy a samsung phone do you call samsung?! people like this should not be allowed to buy an iphone. give’em a motorola one and see how many of them will call back to replace the blades…

  • What is a Moran?

  • Granted, the I-Phone is a very attractive product. And I thought about it. But I’m going to wait to see the LG-Prada and some of the new Sony-Ericson’s. What I find funny is how upset people get about a phone, or an OS. Hey if it works for you GREAT, ENJOY, the freedom to choose different things is what it’s about. I think someone posted about early adoption, we all know in 2008 generation 2 will be out.. So the folks that bought them, have fun; now that all the AT&T store are quiet, I think I will walk over and play with a I-Phone… (Hum does At&T offer that 15 day trail with service and phone?)

  • The iPhone does come with a calculator, doesn’t it?

    Mark says:
Apple is estimated to have sold well over 500,000 phones on Friday and Saturday. If one was to accept a “failure to activate” rate of 0.01% that would mean maybe 5000 people have had problems – and 495,000 were problem free.

Hello, Mark. 0.01% of 500,000 is 50, not 5000. Perhaps you meant 1%.

  • Apple used an advertising tactic to get people to rush and buy a product before reviews came in or even if they didn’t need it. One of Ricky Martin’s CD and the movie Titanic on VHS were sold this way. They created an atmosphere where people anticipated the launch of the product with such hype that they waited in long lines from the day before the launch. It’s really stupid to fall for these “Hurry and get your copy before the supplies run out and\or be the first one to have it” advertising schemes.

  • I’m not surprised at those assholes.

  • Some of yall need to chill! As with any new devise you have to work the bugs out….give it a chance. 95% of computer problems is the person sitting in front of the machine. We live in such a “me” society these days. Put the thing down and take your kid fishing…..
    “Bender” and “Jeez Louise” Rock!!!!!

  • This is sooo funny. What exactly is revolutionary about the iPhone? The web browser? This looks to be a better design but others have a browser. The MP3 player? You mean you can scroll album covers versus a quicker text based menu system….not even close to revolutionary. It plays media clips on a nice screen? Still nothing new here just a nicer view.

What is so revolutionary? Making something better in a few areas does not make it revolutionary. This device even lacks many of the standard features of basic phones/PDA’s.

The key for this device will be about 6 months out. Mark my word that many current iPhone owners will be not be very happy with the product or the service. The new factor will be gone and they will see that they dropped a ton of cash for a device that just doesnt stack up across the board.

  • I think you’re all missing a point about the choice of carrier. Apple didn’t want to make different versions of the phone. Thats pretty clear. Going with ATT and the GSM RF deck allows them to ’seamlessly’ go over seas to sell to the Europeans without a ton of modifications to the iphone. So while the network data speeds may not be as fast, they made a smart business decision to keep things as similar as possible from an engineering leverage perspective.

  • Me want Iphone!!!
Granted the technology is new, somesay not revolutionary, its all Iphone envy. im not ashamed to say I bought into the hype yes I want one and i hope they finally strike a deal so we in europe can enjoy the fad that is the Iphone. Im touting an N95 not bad not bad but a gadget freak like me wants needs the latest and greatest!!!!
I see some posting saying how cool their old phone is thats sum ol b”"sh”t!
If they could get their hands on one they would, if they dont care so much why are they reading these posts??

Join the coalition of the Iphonistas hehehe.
(so who can i convince to buy one and send it to me hmmmm? )

  • The lunacy continues…..

The iPhone costs too much – Compared to the Nokia N95 ($699) and the Prada Phone ($778) the iPhone looks positively inexpensive.

The iPhone doesn’t have the (insert here) feature – Its not about features. It never has been. What Apple sells is an idea that you should be able to easily access and use all the features of your device. Extraneous features (like an FM radio on the iPod) are removed. One of Steve Jobs’ best qualities is his ability to accurately determine what the buying public really wants/needs and then build products that meet (or generally) exceed those needs.

My phone has all the features of the iPhone, and more! – See above. Then – I’m sure that your Yugo drives as well as my Mercedes. It just that my car does it with a level of style and elegance that your Yugo will never match. Does that make the Yugo bad? No, of course not. But you get what you pay for and you get what you can afford. If all you can afford is a Yugo, you get a Yugo. Its not a Mercedes, but it beats walking.

Revolutionary or Evolutionary? You decide –
The iPhone allows you to make a call by simply tapping a name or number in your address book, a favorites list, or a call log. It also automatically syncs all your contacts from a PC, Mac, or Internet service. And it lets you select and listen to voicemail messages in whatever order you want — just like email.
Visual Voicemail allows you to go directly to any of your messages without listening to the prior messages. So you can quickly select the messages that are most important to you.
iPhone includes an SMS application with a predictive QWERTY soft keyboard that prevents and corrects mistakes, making it easier and more efficient to use than the small plastic keyboards on many smartphones.
A photo management application syncs photos from your PC or Mac
A beautiful 3.5-inch widescreen display that has the highest resolution of any display of its size.
A rich HTML email client and Safari — the most advanced web browser ever on a portable device — which automatically syncs bookmarks from your PC or Mac. Safari also includes built-in Google and Yahoo! search. iPhone is fully multi-tasking, so you can read a web page while downloading your email in the background over Wi-Fi or EDGE.
With Google Maps and iPhone’s Maps application, you can view maps and satellite images, or get directions and traffic information. (No need for expensive and battery-sucking GPS)
iPhone features an entirely new interface based on a large multi-touch display and innovative new software that lets you control everything using only your finger.

    And there’s more, too!

So the iPhone is a device that allows you to surf the web with a real web browser, get rich HTML e-mail from home or work (yes it DOES work with Exchange servers), listen to music, watch widescreen videos, send text messages, store photos, oh and one more thing…it’s a phone, too!

  • Dru Richmand:

Apple did a brilliant thing. Launch the phone on a 2G+ network to let the worlds worst and least sophisticated cell users work the bugs out. Then come out with the 3G version in 2008 in the rest of the world :)

    Jobs strikes a goal again!!!

  • The iPhone’s internet screams along on WiFi networks. Sitting at home running wireless is the only way to use it- – - and this is the only tiny device that can do it! And make calls, and play your music.

uhhh Bill J ever heard of the Nokia N series (Most are 3G / 2G / WiFI/ BlueTooth) MP3, and 3gpp player and like my N93 comes with great video capture and even TV out!

  • Effortless activation and a wonderful product. I wonder if all the “whingers” actually managed to read and follow the very simple instructions?

  • The iPhone’s internet screams along on WiFi networks. Sitting at home running wireless is the only way to use it- – - and this is the only tiny device that can do it! And make calls, and play your music.

nope. never have. sorry. So make that “only tiny devic e that can do it… with style!” better?

  • Did any of you here the news……

Apple is coming out with a cell phone!

You all need to get a life! It’s a freaking phone.

Now excuse me while I go get laid, you all remember what p**sy is… dont you?

  • we are still waiting for phones in Africa what’s the problem.

  • The weak link in this chain is AT and T. Let’s face it big phone companies do not spend any money on call centers or customer service. It has NEVER been a strong point with any of them. Sprint is the bottom of the barrel in this regard.

Bad choice by Jobs to entrust anything but the actual “transmission of the signal/data” to these guys. He’ll learn soon enough. In the meantime watch the anger gather like storm clouds in July.

  • fake story detector - July 2nd, 2007 at 11:19 am GMT+5

    planted story

  • lets all face it apple sucks and its just another ploy for steve to get some more money, much like mr. gates, but still..who is going to spend 600 bucks on a phone? honestly, why not just get a verizon phone w/ a sim chip and save yourself the hassle, but then again, that would be to easy, haha.

  • Inaccurate Title Spotter - July 2nd, 2007 at 11:20 am GMT+5

One complaint != “rants rolling in”

  • WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE REALLY THINK !!! PEOPLE PORTING THEIR NUMBERS IN FROM OTHER CELLULAR SERVICES IS GOING TO TAKE A WHILE ! WHEN YOU PORT IN AT ANY OTHER TIME , THEY TELL YOU ITS GOING TO TAKE UP TO 24 HOURS ! SOME CELL PHONE COMPANIES ARE GOING TO HOLD OFF RELEASING YOUR PHONE NUMBERS TO AT&T . THIS ISNT AN APPLE PROBLEM .. ITS SPRINT , VERIZON , T-MOBILE NOT WANTING TO LOSE THEIR CUSTOMERS . THEY CAN DRAG THEIR FEET WHEN RELEASING YOUR NUMBERS TO OTHER CARRIERS … HANG IN THEIR , THIS IS AN AWESOME PHONE !

  • “a colt of morans”

that’s the funniest part of this whole post and thread

FYI–it’s CULT, and MORONS, you moron

At least someone else noticed this. People calling other people stupid while making grammar and spelling mistakes really doesn’t further their cause.

  • People who care about cost-benefit did not buy iPhones.

People who care about realiability and cost-effectiveness did not buy iPhones.

The people who bought iPhones were either brainwashed Apple iPod-People who just HAD to have everything Jobs pushes, or were simply obsessed with having the latest gadget.

Either way, they deserve what they get.

I wonder how many people are going to get in traffic accidents while trying to multitask on the i(diot)Phones while driving.

This is worth reposting…I laughed so hard I almost started crying at work. BTW, I am a republican and that is still absolutely hiarious.

  • I’ll tell you first off when I heard AT&T was going to be heading up the service on the iPhone I knew people would be having issues. Idk about anywhere else but where I live, I see AT&T trucks working on the lines every freaking day. Good luck with your bricks!

  • The iPhone’s main problem is AT&T. Their coverage in some cities (Chicago and I heard LA) is unacceptable, they also made a mess transporting my old number. Also, if you hope to get rid of your digital camera for this all-in-one device, don’t. The iPhone camera is comparable to last generation phones and has no video function.

What you don’t need any longer is your video iPod. Video on the iPhone is spectacular. If they released it as an iPod only with the iPod’s current capacity (30G and 80G), with fully-working bluetooth and WiFi, it’d be the ultimate iPod.
