"heres one more observation: play with the iPhone for 5 minutes then reach into your pocket for your silver buttoned OLD phone. Hold them next to each other and TRY to convince yourself that 1) iPhone isnt a revolutionary breakthru product and 2) that your OLD phone doesnt look like the old calculators you find in the back of a drawer every now and then. You will shudder to be holding the old thing."

Now try and dial the iPhone with your eyes closed.

Then go back and try to dial with your "old silver buttoned phone;" you know the one with raised buttons and probably a tab or nub on the 5 key... You know, your "old phone" with the tactile feedback that allows you to dial without looking. Try that on your new iPhone.

While the GUI is cool, the touch screen concept is not unique (how many Palm Pilots and Palm based phones have had touch screens for how long now), using a touch screen as the dial pad does have limitations.

Can't wait to see what iPhone2 looks like.

Oh dear Apple. Check out the activity on the Apple forum http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1139&start=0

There are some seriously unhappy campers. Amongst others, speaker problems are widespread. And, finally people are realising there are basic features missing. Anyone that actually gets past the "oh look at me I've got an iPhone" phase and start trying to actually use the iPhone are having problems. Oh, and try listening to music and browsing with Safari... see how long it takes for the music player to bum out. Oh, and Safari will crash 'randomly' whilst zooming... etc. etc. There are bugs people, not simple glitches, repeatable bugs!

And the biggest worry is the calm resolution suggested by Apple... "oh, you just need to reset your device"... ha ha, c'mon, the $600 device needs to be reset because you pressed the wrong button at the wrong time or had the wrong things open at the wrong time!? Whhhaaaaat!!!

And core usability like searching through multiple contacts... shocking... was this phone tested at all!!?? (and by anyone with more than 10 friends / contacts).

Die hard Apple fans need to apply some objective analysis and push back on Mr Jobs for a better more reliable product.

I would bet that in addition to Sprint, the account the author has is probably a business account. From the reports I have read, almost 9 out of 10 buyers experiencing problems had business accounts, which cannot just be ported over. The company the account belongs to has to contact the current carrier to authorize a change from a business to a personal account, and although AT&T and Apple clearly stated business accounts were not eligible, most of the people now complaining didn't read or pay attention. I bought two iPhones, both activated within less than 2-3 minutes and I have had zero problems. The call quality has been far clearer than on my old Treo with Verizon and several people I've spoken to using the iPhone have commented how much clearer the call was and asked what was different.

Just so we clear up the speed difference between carriers. I used to work on cell phone games so I have a pretty good idea of the quality of each of the different networks. AT&T is at the absolute bottom of the list with regards to quality and service. 3G is not just a little bit better, it's a lot better. On Verizon, I can download 700MB+ files to my Motorola Q at roughly DSL Speeds (~150k/s).

Weak AT&T signals are going to eat up people's batteries as well. Do a search on Google news for iPhone and battery and you'll start to see articles regarding short battery life and inconsistancies.

Just my 2c.

Took us 36 hours to activate. Kept failing for unknown reasons. We just left the MAC alone while it tried to activate and we would monitor it for hours until the damned message appeared and then we would restart.

Our plan was fine and we've been on Cingular (now AT&T) for 7 years so there were no issues there. At&T had some major issues activating and I highly doubt it was under 2%. If it was that low, it wouldn't have made such headlines.

Overall the phone is cool. Usability and form factor is nice. Only had a couple of hours to play with it last night thanks to the ridiculous activation time. They definitely owe me at least a day's credit and the activation fee. I've been a beta tester for Cingular for 5 years now and this is a pretty cool phone but no way I'd pay retail or more for it.

Apples are a joke and AT&T is right there with them. I would not have an iphone even if it was given to me. I have left AT&T so many times and they keep buying the companies I go to. I only have had problems when I have been with them. Apples just do not hold up and their technical staff just are not technical. I do like their commercials.

The lunacy continues:

Ben said: "... it is a “smart phone” it is still just a toy. Right now it doesn’t have the proper software to be used for serious business applications."

What 'proper' software would that be? Software that allows you to send/receive rich HTML e-mail? The ability to connect to virtually any POP, IMAP, and Microsoft Exchange Server for e-mail? Perhaps the ability to go directly to any of your voice mail messages without listening to the prior messages. Maybe its Google Maps and the iPhone Map program's ability to guide you to your destination without the battery-sucking GPS hardware and software. Maybe the ability to read Word, Excel, and PDF documents is what you mean.

Ben said: "...limited battery life..." Compare these figures to the competition:

Talk time: Up to 8 hours
Standby time: Up to 250 hours
Internet use: Up to 6 hours
Video playback: Up to 7 hours
Audio playback: Up to 24 hours

"...and small screens..."

3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display
480-by-320-pixel resolution at 160 dpi

"...how often are you really going to surf the web on your phone or waste your battery playing music or watching videos on a tiny screen?"

If what I'm reading from the people who've purchase an iPhone, I suspect quite a lot.

I agree that the guy who whined to the BBB should be herded to the Moran farm with the rest of the colts, along with a lot of the other posters here.

I think what alot of people are forgetting is that while it is a "smart phone" it is still just a toy. Right now it doesn't have the proper software to be used for serious business applications.

I also think these all in on devices are mostly pointless due to limited battery life and small screens. After the wow factor wears off, how often are you really going to surf the web on your phone or waste your battery playing music or watching videos on a tiny screen?

Over the weekend I went to an electronic store to buy a TV. While I was doing my final due diligence I noticed a guy buzzing around like a mosquito with ecstatic grin. I glanced at him and noticed white plugs connected to a device in his hand I recognized as iPhone. As he walked around he was pushing the device in people's field of vision so someone would notice it and feed his ego by oohing and aahing. It wasn't working very well, so he now got a call, or pretended to get one, and was yelling - Yes, I got my iPhone, I'm talking on iPhone right now... I turned away in disgust.

The iPhone technology is a turn on for lots of people but I'd say that large percentage of those who rushed to get iPhone this weekend simply want to show off. They hype was built to point of explosion for many and they had to have it even those who can't afford it. Most of folks who like if for technology are waiting to see how well it functions over the next couple of months, or for the second gen, or even to see what technology will competition come forth with by the time their current contract expires.

I have used a converged device for over a year that plays movies and music, can browse web at 3G speeds, check email, play games, take photos and videos, and more. Maybe next gen iPhone will introduce something truly revolutionary so for me it's worth the wait.

My iPhone does the same my Sony Ericsson w810i does, but much, much better. The iPod does everything others mp3 players before did, but much, much better. What people are paying for is the user experience guys. My boss bought a Moto Razr when it came out years ago, it costed $500 and Cingular was the only carrier, so even paying a lot of cash for a new gadget isn't new. Media is in love with the iPhone because it attracts a lot of readers, months ago it was the Nintendo Wii and the Zune.

as for the question: why did apple chose att as its partner? simple... verizon turned them down thinking it will be a dud.. its all there in reports... do a google search.

NEW YORK — Verizon Wireless, the No. 2 U.S. cellphone carrier, passed on the chance to be the exclusive distributor of the iPhone almost two years ago, balking at Apple's rich financial terms and other demands.
Among other things, Apple wanted a percentage of the monthly cellphone fees, say over how and where iPhones could be sold and control of the relationship with iPhone customers, said Jim Gerace, a Verizon Wireless vice president. "We said no. We have nothing bad to say about the Apple iPhone. We just couldn't reach a deal that was mutually beneficial."

Verizon's decision to pull the plug on talks sent Apple into the waiting arms of Cingular, which will be the exclusive U.S. carrier for the iPhone. The multifunction device is expected to ship in June and cost about $500.

Also, many people have said why put the blame on apple for the activation/service issues? because as part of the deal with att, apple wants control of all customer service issues, training etc.

The iPhone's main problem is AT&T. Their coverage in some cities (Chicago and I heard LA) is unacceptable, they also made a mess transporting my old number. Also, if you hope to get rid of your digital camera for this all-in-one device, don't. The iPhone camera is comparable to last generation phones and has no video function.

What you don't need any longer is your video iPod. Video on the iPhone is spectacular. If they released it as an iPod only with the iPod's current capacity (30G and 80G), with fully-working bluetooth and WiFi, it'd be the ultimate iPod.

I'll tell you first off when I heard AT&T was going to be heading up the service on the iPhone I knew people would be having issues. Idk about anywhere else but where I live, I see AT&T trucks working on the lines every freaking day. Good luck with your bricks!

People who care about cost-benefit did not buy iPhones.

People who care about realiability and cost-effectiveness did not buy iPhones.

The people who bought iPhones were either brainwashed Apple iPod-People who just HAD to have everything Jobs pushes, or were simply obsessed with having the latest gadget.

Either way, they deserve what they get.

I wonder how many people are going to get in traffic accidents while trying to multitask on the i(diot)Phones while driving.
