Zelda: Ocarina of Time Named “Best Game of All Time” By Edge Magazine

Edge magazine has named The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time the best game of all time. Yes, everyone hates these so-called “best” lists and many of them are created just as Digg bait nowadays, but Edge magazine, in my opinion, isn’t your typical video game magazine. It doesn’t use words like “awesome” or “super-de-dooper” to describe and review games, but uses a measured, professional tone akin more akin to Vanity Fair or the New Yoker than the average game rag. The full list of the top 100 games, as compiled by Edge readers, industry “experts” and Edge’s own editorial team, will be released tomorrow but the top 10 have already been announced. And they are:
1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Resident Evil 4
3. Super Mario 64
4. Half-Life 2
5. Super Mario World
…
6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
7. Halo: Combat Evolved
8. Final Fantasy XII
9. Tetris
10. Super Metroid
I won’t even argue with Ocarina; RE:4 I’m a little surprised about, but I did enjoy it; Mario 64 is a given for any top 10; I’ve never played Half-Life 2 so I can’t speak to that; Mario World reminds me of when I was young and happy; LTTP I never played (sorry!); Halo was just OK in my book; FFXII is too damn complicated for the near-zero amount of patience I have nowadays; Tetris shouldn’t even be on the list since it’s a game that transcends gaming; and I never played any Metroid.
All in all, a really solid list. Let’s see what the rest of it looks like, Edge.

Tetris and Super Metroid over Castlevania: Symphony of the Night? Wow - that scares me - it better be #11 or they know nothing of games in my opinion. Where are all the classic games (tetris does not qualify) - Half Life 2, RE 4, sequels for god’s sake! Sad, sad.

Even though the Big N gets more than half of the 10, Super Metroid should also be on there.

Tetris is the greatest by most any metric you’d care to use. Hours played, sales volume, system ports, etc. I’m suspect of any list that doesn’t put it right on the top.
I object in principle to the inclusion of any Final Fantasy title… ugh.
And I’d substitute Halo for Goldeneye… It was Goldeneye that brought FPS to consoles, and Halo stole a lot from it.
Doom is conspicuously absent. As is Starcraft. As is Street Fighter II. As is Sim City 2000.

Uh, Matthew…Super Metroid already is on the list.
You probably meant Metroid Prime. And if you did, yes, it does belong there.
Also, I totally agree with replacing Halo for Goldeneye. Nothing can compare to its glory.

This list was probably voted on by 12 year olds on crack. HALO 2 is by far the greatest game ever. I’ll agree that the campaign is a little lacking but the multiplayer mode especially over XBox Live cannot be beaten.

This list is with out a doubt voted on by nu-gamers, I.e 15-20 year olds.
Where is the likes of Elite, Defender, Doom and legend of mana?
All of the above (apart from mana) were benchmarks for games of today, and most games (including a few in the above list) dont even get near these!
I have to say the the only games in the top ten that merit being there are numbers #2,#6,#7
.
The others have been bettered or are copies of better games.
