Hey Nick.

I don't know if you know about this yet, and it's been a while since you posted, but I have around 10-15 PS2 games and was looking for a list of some sorts that would guarantee my games work on a PS3 before investing in something that expensive. I came across this:

http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus
http://www.ps3comp.com/view.asp

some of my games claim to work without issues, and some claim to not work at all. But don't be fooled. Some user tested games have been reported to work just fine even after the list claims they don't work at all. I guess you're just going to have to see if you can try it yourself :)

If I purchase an 80GB PS3 what are the odds that Sony will release something better than just the emulation software like an actual hardware upgrade option, like an emotion engine external drive? If all they offer is future firmware upgrades how soon will those be available that actually work for a good portion of PS2 games. The reason why I ask is that I have around 50 PS2 games.

Who cares? will anyone really go back and play their old ps2 and ps1 games on a ps3? why would you go back and play old out dated crap when you got awesome games like assassins creed or rock band or even blazing angels? if you are any good gamer at all then you should have already beat all of your old games. if you already beat them what the hell is the point of playing them again? move on, get over it and trade them in for new better games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark, the old game discs will still work, just make sure you try/buy games that is fully compatible with PS3. Future firmware upgrades will improve game compatibility.

Why do you think you won't be able to play Rez, considering it's listed in the European compatibility DB as playable with no known issues?

(There's no listing for Final Fantasy Tactics, guess you do lose there.)

They're going to use an emulator, like the 360 uses. You just won't be able to use your disc, but you'll be able to download the game instead.

Would a future firmware upgrade make it possible to play those PS1/PS2 games without the emotion engine? That better be the reason for the removal.

This kind of just makes me want to get the 60GB more.

I mean, right now the only difference between the 60 and 80gb version is what...the hard drive size, and free copy of Motorstorm, and now the Emotion Engine? 20GB extra isn't enough for me to want the 80gb version, nor is Motorstorm. Even if 60GB wasn't enough, didn't Sony make it easy to replace the hard drives? Just swap it out, and you'll still be able to play all you PS1/PS2 games.
