I dig the Beatles. I really do. When I was in grade school my dad’s vinyl collection was just about the coolest thing ever and he had the Stones and some Hugh Masakela and quite a few Beatles albums. Good times. Good times.
So now that we’re fairly certain that a Yellow Submarine version of the iPod is coming out complete with the entire Beatles back catalog, I have to ask “Why do I care?” The Apple/Apple lawsuits are long dead and buried, as is most of the band’s relevance to a younger audience. They made great music, but if that’s the case, why not make a special Sinatra edition? It kind of smacks of Baby Boomer post-hippie love to me, but I’m just a snide youngster inured the shallow marketing ploys.
There. I said it. I really have no idea why people care about Beatles on iTunes. Sir Paul and the lads’ fans already have all the albums and bootlegs they could ever want and this is just Steve Jobs saying “I finally got these guys. Screw you, kids who beat me up because I kept singing ‘Within You, Without You’ in grade school!”
Get set for Apple’s Yellow Submarine Beatles iPod [TechDigest]

Merlin Mann made this rumour up months ago!
this rumor has been circulating for years. it’s nice to think there will be a yellow ipod soon, so i posted it.
What are you basing this on? An unsubstantiated rumor? You take a completely unsubstantiated rumor and state you’re fairly certain? Do you have any other information to corroborate this?
Yup, New York Time must be real scared of excellent journalism being displayed here in the Techcrunch family of sites.
“This is gonna replace CD’s soon; guess I’ll have to buy the White Album again”
-Kay Men in Black
Good to see the ketamine is working, Shelley. Stay on it. This is the same information that gets picked up by Reuters, JP Morgan, and even the NY Times and is about as accurate as the sources, which, as you probably know, can’t really reveal themselves, especially when Apple is concerned. I suspect you’re an insulted Beatles fan, in which case I’d suggest putting on a little White Album and rocking out to Back in the USSR.
Merlin Mann FTW!
So you have information from sources other than planted rumors done for a joke. Something solid on which to base your learned opinion. Oh, OK. Phew, I would hate to think that Crunchgear writers just pulls facts out of their butts.
I really doubt that anyone could afford the royalties and what not for a Beatles specific iPod. And most people who like the Beatles already have most of the group’s CDs and just load ourselves. I’m more interested in a yellow iPod, because that would be a nice change of pace.
But don’t let my ketamine deprived state prevent from breaking your next hot story: the Paris Hilton iPod, completely with little leopard skin iPod holder that will strap to your chihauhau.
I’m not sure I understand what all of the fuss is here. If people are so desperate to have the Beatles on their iPods, why not buy the CDs right now and download them? It’s pretty easy to do and costs the same as it will cost when Apple makes them available from iTunes. In fact, the current Beatles CDs will sound better than the re-mastered Beatles from iTunes. ITunes Mp3s have extremely poor sound quality.
“When creating an MP3 file, there is a trade-off between the amount of space used and the sound quality of the result. Typically, the creator of the MP3 file is allowed to set a bit rate, which specifies how many kilobits the file may use per second of audio, for example, when ripping a compact disc to this format. The lower the bit rate used, the lower the audio quality will be, but the smaller the file size. Likewise, the higher the bit rate used, the higher quality, and therefore, larger the file size the resulting MP3 will be.”
ITunes, from what I understand, uses a low bit rate. So, why buy songs that will not sound very good. Or is everyone really excited to be able to buy only “Bungalow Bill” for 99 cents?
The Beatles are the greatest thing to ever happen on this Earth.
the beatles are the greatest I agree. When and if the Beatles do get on ipod i believe and hope the guys at apple wouldnt be stupid enough to have a digitally remastered Beatles catalogue where the audio quality will be lower than cd’s. That would suck. I also read somewhere there would also along with the Beatles catalogue be new Beatles material previously unreleased like a new anthology or something. that would be awesome.
