It certainly is intertesting on the different ways you can optimise youtube videos. It doesn lend itself to being optimised in exaclty the same way you would with you google seo and google maps.

Hey all
I uderstand (I think) the youtube coding. I do have a question tho. I downloaded some flv clips from you tube but I want to make a DVD video that will play on home dvd players. Most of the clips are: frame rate 25, bit rate 4000, frame size 720x480.
What export settings can I use to convert these flv to a format that will play good on dvd players. Not sure which codec is best to make the settings. Any help would be appreciated much.
Thanks

No, they do not. I have been selling PCs for 7 years now, and I have yet to see companies make firewire 'standard'.

I personally have 2 computers I built myself, as well as 4 laptops, and 2 OEM PCs in my house, one has firewire out of them all, and all the computers were manufactured in 2009. USB is the standard, esata, and firewire, are useless.

Light your videos. You can make footage from a crappy camcorder look much better if you light properly.

Crush your blacks. ..

Use H.264, Increase your bitrate, find a good medium between bitrate and file size.

You're wrong to tell people not to use Windows Movie Maker, for two major reasons - it's free and easy to use. Not everyone can afford, or is inclined to pay, $30 for Quicktime Pro. And, not everyone needs to encode their videos using the latest, greatest codec (H.264).

Windows users who have Vista Home Premium or Vista Ultimate have Movie Maker HD which will allow them to optimize their HD video for YouTube. And, those with XP or Vista Home Basic or Business editions can still use the old Windows Movie Maker to encode videos to get the "high quality" viewing option from YouTube IF THE CORRECT SETTING IS USED.

High quality is not HD by any means, but the high quality videos on YouTube are still very good and that's enough for most people.

Macs ARE PCs! Normal mainboards with intel CPUs and normal graphics and other hardware, running cross of BSD and nextgen NeXTStep. Nothing special. Only a nice case and name so you pay a 50% premium on top.

Greetings from sunny Queensland, Oz. I'm a newbie and set up my first YouTube video clip experiments last month. I've been working on improving download quality and this thread has been most useful and I thank everyone for their contribution. I am slowly working through all the suggestions :-)

My problem is common in that the picture breaks up into the square pixels when the camera is in motion - which as I'm videoing little walking trips is most of the time!

My test video clip is at
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=knvsvYG-55I
where I uploaded the original AVI file without any additional compression or editing. It's the best quality so far but still has pixelation (I think that's the term?). When I play the file on Media Play the little picture is perfectly smooth - in fact that's the case for all my other video clips even those I've compressed with GraphEdit to mp4.

I would be most grateful for any advice to get download quality as good as the upload. If I do find a solution I will post details here. Thanks again.

It's funny how all the Windows diehards reading this have to cry foul just because someone had the temerity to recommend an industry standard compression codec. Free or not, Windows Movie Maker produces compatibility-limited garbage. That's not an opinion -it's an industry FACT. The only place WMV formats are used are in Microsoft's own little monopolistic universe -Microsoft compatible players and software like WMP, Zune, and X-Box. Like always, they expect the whole world to bend over backward and accommodate their "innovation". No thanks.

If you're happy crippling your media files with complete disregard for how you might want to use them in the future (in an industry that has CLEARLY not kowtowed to Microsoft's licensing demands by preferring MPEG-based standards instead), then go ahead and archive all your edited footage in WMV.

The media industry is not driven by the whims of a single company and their personal spin on things. No matter how much of the desktop software market share Microsoft owns, whether or not they "give away" they NLE editor for free, and whether it produces a better or even similar picture quality are all moot points. When DVDs, Blu-Ray content, and broadcast formats are built on WMV technology, and when YouTube abandons platform independence by ditching the Flash format, maybe I'll care what the Windows drones think. Until then, I'll stick with flexibility and compatibility.

Great reading through all the comments on here, At the moment i use camtasia 3 and am trying different settings on youtube, one tricky part for screencaptures is the original capture size, i usually go for 800x600 but i just tried 640x480 to see if that comes up better.. i use the apple codec.. i suspect the newer version of camtasia has better settings for youtube though..hmm

Perhaps this should be updated? with the new youtube high def

cheers

Paul

P.S. im also curious about that girl on the left, who is that?

I have not found that to be true. Also, if you upload a high-quality .MOV file, YouTube now adds a link under the video player for "higher quality video". If you upload as Flash Video, that link/option does not appear.
