Writer recommends MP4 or .mov files. What about M4v, the codec for apple TV? Isn't this also an MPEG4 format? And now ladies and gentlemen, my contribution! Ta da da da....When sharing a youtube video, before you copy the url, add a little dongle onto the URL first. Add the following: &fmt=18. This will help a little for videos and help a immensely if you have exported some stills to quicktime format out of iPhoto. The file information on such a file is listed as a .mov file, MPEG layer 3. Anyway, it looks great on you tube if you add &fmt=18.

I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and it has export optimization for YouTube, MySpace, iPod, etc... Usually, a 3 minute video with music is only around 12mb and it looks decent. I mean (decent for youtube).

Another key is good lighting. Crush your blacks too! That'll get rid of some of the video noise you'll find in dark spots of the video.

I find that when I shoot HD 1080i with my Canon HV-30, down convert it to an SD timeline, crush the blacks, and use the YouTube export setting... I get decent results as well.

video compression. It is also known as MPEG-4 Part 10, or MPEG-4 AVC (for Advanced Video Coding). It is latest block based motion estimation based codec developed by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) together with the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) as the product of a partnership effort known as the Joint Video Team (JVT). The ITU-T H.264 standard and the ISO/IEC MPEG-4 Part 10 standard (formally, ISO/IEC 14496-10) are jointly maintained so that they have identical technical content.
About the gray startup problem — If you use the Quicktime Pro “Export for Web” settings instead of just “Export” it creates an .m4v file that uploads with the grey crud at the beginning on YouTube. If you export to a regular Quicktime .mov file it looks fine. I don’t know why but that’s what happens to my files.

Now, can somebody tell me if it’s possible to replace a YouTube video with a clean version and keep the comments and # of viewers on the file?

Hi,
I tend to agree with you. Even Youtube recommends 640x480 uploads. Are most recommending 320x240 uploads just to keep long vids under the 100MB mark?

However, I do believe youtube allows 30fps, at least that's the info displayed on some of the vids I've downloaded from them for analysis.

If the goal is to get as close to 100MB as possible then I guess there are two options:
1. 640x480 at a lower bit rate
2. 320x240 at the highest bit rate possible, just below overkill

After youtube encodes, which leaves you with the better quality? I guess that is the question.

Whenever I upload a video to youtube (after I've recorded in iMovie and moved it to quicktime) there are visual glitches at random intervals; it is as if the bottom of the screen suddenly shoots up and makes the bottom half really blurry for a milisecond. It's like a sudden blurry popup. This happens about ten times during each video and it's quite distracting. Any thoughts?

@JD: Had the same problem with losing the audio when tryin to export. Just found this and it worked great:

Do a Google search for MPEG Streamclip. It's free and it works with QT PRO. Sometimes the audio in an MPEG file is imbedded and it must be extracted. Streamclip extracts the audio while converting the video.

I've run into this problem a few times: When attempting to upload a .mov file to youtube from my macbook pro or PowerMac G5 I get no audio. Only on my uploaded files, every other youtube video plays great. Just NO audio on mine. Exporting directly from imovie (though had the same issue when I tried from FCP 5.5 and 6.0)
Anyone got anything on this? Thanks in advance!
