Gmail is too important to me to skip it and move to a closed system. Most important is the ability to search my messages and conversations, and also export contacts for use in any other program. I won't be giving that up any time soon.

I don't think I've ever used email as a social communication tool (other than to family and business). It's always been about the instant messaging for me. Though I do use 'teh facebook' and 'teh myspace'...and I do send messages on them... But that's usually for people I don't talk to as often as I would on instant messenger. and I do txt too, but I'm usually drunk.
