We see Cupertino as the USSR and the developers as President Reagan: they’re locked in an ideological conflict, one pressing for quality and happy masses through control, the other through power-to-the-chosen Democracy. And we all know how this story turns out.</p>
<p>All political metaphors aside, it’s a step in the right direction towards a happier iPhoneosphere (I’m trademarking that, don’t try it) that will further the iPhone as a Web 2.0 and Mobile 2.0 convergence device. With trickle down economics.</p>

As much as I’d like the iPhone to be cracked open and hacked so that we can make it do whatever we want, I think that viruses will end up running rampant through the iPhone network or from the internet. I always have mixed emotions about this topic. It’s such a good piece of hardware with good software but there are shortcomings.
On the other hand, if the software could be made available to 3rd Party Developers, then they could offer certain programs on their website that they can assure are safe. Then people would just have to suffer the consequences if they try to get software any other way. But then again, they have iTunes under control and they won’t want to lose money on software that they can make on their own…
Too many sides to the issue. Eff it!
