No Vista SP1 Until 2009?

angry

Say it ain’t so, Microsoft. Lest Vista become a waterslide away from me that takes me further every day. Say it ain’t so.

Rumors are currently flying about that Vista’s first service pack (SP1) won’t be available until 2009. That’s impossible…or is it?

Valleywag reports that “Microsoft has apparently told executives at one of the world’s largest PC makers not to expect a formal release of Windows Vista SP1 — the first major set of upgrades and bug fixes to its Vista operating system — until 2009 at the earliest.”

This might explain the comments from Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci from earlier today. Disappointing indeed.

Ben (Who am I?)

Every day I question my use of Vista. I feel some kind of inertia building, slowly tempting me to go back to XP. One evening it might be Battlefield 2142 repeatedly crashing, another day it might be some random small file copy operation crashing explorer. The one finger in my dyke (so to speak), holding back the XP waters, is the thought of an impending service pack to make things all better.

Here’s the deal: if this rumour is confirmed, I’m going back to XP.

I think actually, despite the seemingly long wait, this could be a good sign. If there was one thing Microsoft should’ve learned from Vista disasters, it was, “TEST” before release, and I think the longer amount of time between product releases could mean they are following this lesson and taking a little more time to make sure everything works before bringing it to users. I’ve heard some good things about improvements on the new Vista, and let’s hope they turn out to be everything that’s expected … and a lot more than Vista delivered initially.
