Microsoft Office For Mac Delayed Again

It’s no surprise Microsoft isn’t a fan of Apple. So it makes perfect sense that Microsoft Office for Mac was pushed back from Q3 2007 to January 2008. The decision comes not from tired programmers who need a vacation in Orlando, but instead from Microsoft’s MBU or Mac Business Unit. Reasons cited include making sure that the software released is of “quality” - whatever that means. Don’t expect the next OS X version of Office until next summer at this point.

Boy, this piece is so full of inaccuracies, I don’t know where to start. So I’ll just dive in.
1: It is not delayed AGAIN. They always release office for Mac about six months after office for PC. So this is the first delay. Previous reports of delays were nonsense. It’s been on schedule until now.
2: Microsoft the parent company might be full of Mac haters, but the MacBU is filled with 180 people who love Apple, many of whom have been Mac programmers all their careers. So to ascribe some nonsense about animosity to Apple is pure bunk. If this division of Microsoft didn’t make money for the company, they would be out of jobs. And if they delayed it for such a petty reason, they would likely get a new boss.
3: Quality - well duh, I guess after reading this piece it’s not so duh as I thought. Quality. From ID Software, they always answered the question of when a game will be available with - “When it’s done.” People who care about quality don’t stick to a schedule just to stick to it. Journalists - or bloggers - have no such luxury - or compunction to be accurate it would seem.

“It’s no surprise Microsoft isn’t a fan of Apple.” Apple is one of our largest partners and their customers are hugely important for Microsoft. Rest assured the decision to focus on quality was not done in spite.

Man, turn down the temp.
I am a big Apple fan, but with that, give the MacBU a break, I would rather wait for a fully cooked suite, not some rushed out the door mishmash. I’ve been in large projects and understand how issues can delay even well planned projects.

Microsoft doesn’t hate Mac. Office for Mac and Windows running on Macs just increases their market share. PC makers hate Mac.
P.S. Is it ethical to put links to your own site (simpleweather.com) from your employer’s (Crunch Network) well established network to gain traffic and credibility with search engines? I thinks its shady particularly as it has no relevance to the content of the story (i.e. Orlando/Office for Mac). boo.

Hey Vinny, here’s one for you: Apple bought the rights to SoundJam MP in 2000. They stripped out some features, put a pretty face on it, and renamed it “iTunes.” And how long did they delay making it compatible w. Windows? Three and a half years. I think they kept saying the delay was because they wanted to make sure that the software released is of “quality” - whatever that means.
