NEWSFLASH: John C. Dvorak Negative About Something

dvorakCrotchety old crapapple John C. Dvorak is predicting that the whole Web 2.0 isn’t going to last. Of course it’s not going to last, guy. Nothing lasts forever…even cold November rain.

I tend to disagree that there’s going to be a “burst” of the Web 2.0 bubble. That word connotates something negative happening. I’d like to think of it as the period of time when all the money-grubbing, idiotic clone sites will die off and we’ll be left with one or two video sharing sites, one or two social networking sites, and one or two widget sites like it was in the beginning.

After all, the whole concept of Web 2.0 is the idea of smart user communities developing useful applications rapidly — not quickly copying a successful site, dropping a couple vowels, and calling it the next big thing.

So yes, let all the bullshit fad sites drown in a sea of AJAX and uninterested user communities so the rest of us can get back to talking up the philosophy behind Ruby on Rails and making useful, relevant sites.

Man, maybe I’m a little crotchety too.

  • Agreed, completely. While I don’t in all honesty offer a favourable opinion of the vast quantity of Web 2.0 startups, I sincerely hope the good ones remain. There are some great ideas out there that truly deserve to succeed. But as in so many situations, the plethora of copycats and unoriginal bandwagon-jumpers are making them harder to appreciate.

  • Of coarse WEB 2.0 won’t last. Where there is a 1.0 and a 2.0 there is sure to follow a 3.0

  • The web is evolutionary…so web 2.0 will at some point become the norm and new innovations will be dubbed 3.0.

Besides, aren’t we already on like 2.1.0 now with security patches and updates for AJAX libraries.

  • P.S. i think u guys secretly lust after John Dvorak. LOL.
