Undercover ‘Dateline’ Reporter Busted At DefCon

by Doug Aamoth on August 5, 2007

DefCon, the annual hacker conference, has a strict policy concerning journalists: filming attendees without their permission is off limits.

Dateline NBC’s Michelle Madigan registered for the conference as a programmer, not a journalist, and was said to be lurking around with a hidden pinhole camera allegedly trying to catch a federal agent on camera.

Madigan was in attendance at what she thought was a “Spot the Fed” contest when DefCon founder Jeff Moss announced that the game was changing to “Spot the Undercover Reporter” and that the reporter was present in the room. The above video tells the rest of the story.

  • I love how the turned the tables on her. But, those comments from the defcon folks following her were some of the most pathetic attempts at humor I have ever heard.

Like a bunch of dorks who clammed up when they finally had the chance to take a shot at a “cool kid”.

  • Now everyone should just be compassionate toward this integrity-challenged “journalist”.
As a matter of fact you should all call her in support either at her office at 30 Rock:
212-664-6615, if you get forwarded to the operater, ask for Michelle or her employee SSO number 206052371
    Or her cell:917-304-7012
    email:
    michelle.madigan@nbcuni.com

She deserves a lot of support!

  • bfos, some people believe her tv show has caused crimes to happen when they otherwise might not. the people following her out had every right to have a sense of humor about her because of her ‘public morality lectures’!

thats awesome! “we just want o ask you some questions!”

    “dont run!”

    priceless

  • I think it’s pretty neat that they outted her. The problem for me is the end when she gets followed and harassed. Not because I’m sympathetic to her or anything, but because the people following her are some of the most awkward and socially inept people I’ve seen in a long time. They’re really just going to make the depiction of people at defcon even worse.

  • Lefty, I know.

I’m fine with them trying to make fun of her. My point was that they failed miserably. Blake saw the same thing.

  • I think it’s awesome that they followed and harassed her. I can’t think of many things worse than having a bunch of forever-pubescent man-boys following me around spewing g-rated, mountain dew fueled barbs in my direction.

  • Michelle Madigan should be fucked in her ass! Not because of what she did, but because it would just be FUN!

  • Her first mistake was a simple one. She’s too pretty to be a programmer, duh. Stick out like a sore thumb in a hacker conference.
