The 1080p Sharp Aquos D64U series is about 25% thinner and 20% lighter than previous Aquos models. The new TVs have a subtle, understated look and will be available in 65-, 52-, 46-, and 42-inch screen sizes. Recessed speakers and side terminals will make wall mounting easier.

Using Sharp’s Advanced Super View (ASV) technology, the LCDs achieve a 10,000:1 contrast ratio and a 4ms response time. Black levels are also apparently much better and the side-viewing angle is a whopping 176 degrees.

“The AQUOS LCD TV line has always set the standard in technology and picture quality. Today, we set a new standard in design,” said Bob Scaglione, senior vice president and group manager, Product and Marketing Group, Sharp Electronics Corporation. “With its graceful, space-saving design and full-HD resolution, Sharp’s AQUOS D64U series provides the ultimate home entertainment experience with the perfect balance of style and performance.”

Pricing is $2,099 for the 42-inch, $2,699 for the 46-inch, and $3,799 for the 52-inch. All models will be available this month except for the 65-inch version, which will be available in September (price not yet set).

  • Hmmm, so, I’m guessing this will initiate a price drop on the previous generation Aquos lineup… This might be a good time to pick up that 46″ I’ve been eying up for the last few months!

25% thinner and 20% lighter doesn’t matter to me, since I’ll be keeping it on a stand!
