Strap in because this isn’t the last digital camera Canon has announced for today. We’re about half way there. The PowerShot G9 is being targeted towards consumers who want a DSLR in a point-and-shoot form factor. That’s what all they say, right? Except for the fact that Canon is offering RAW and RAW+JPEG shooting modes on this 12.1-megapixel PowerShot. The G9 also incorporates Canon’s rock solid OIS, Advanced Face Detection, DIGIC III Image Processor, and 23 shooting modes. The 6x optical zoom lens will surely snap a few memorable photos that you can view on the 3-inch PureColor LCD II screen. Hmm, how much will this cost me?

The PowerShot G9 will hit stores in October with a lithium-ion rechargeable battery and battery charger, a 32MB MMC plus memory card, a USB interface cable, an AV cable, a neck strap, and Canon’s software suite for about $499.99.

Finally we’re seeing some more cameras offering Raw+Jpeg…hopefully we’ll see an updated version of the S5IS that offers Raw as well. I actually wish it didn’t have 12MP though…crowding that sensor seems like a bad idea… these point and shoots already have a bad rep for noisy pictures with ISO settings above 400.

I was so burned by the spotty quality of the G3 (the LCD broke three times, the third time - when I would have gotten a new camera from Good Guys (may they rest in peace) – right after the warranty expired. It’s now a paper weight on my desk at work as I use my 1Ds Mark II. :-D

Damn, this thing sounds awesome! I just bought the Canon SD850IS, which is also an awesome point+shooter, but this one seems to be the better pick with not that much of a price difference to the 850IS.

Dammit, just bought the G7 and they announce a new one. Wish I had waited a little longer. Anyway seems the only change is the addition of RAW capture, the 12MP sensor and the 3″ LCD. As I won’t be using RAW images for now I’ll stick to my G7, which is already a great camera.

Oooh! Have fun with that 32mb MMC card shooting 12mp RAW+JPEG!
This title is mis-leading. A DSLR is defined by a system of interchangeable lenses and through-the-lens shot composition. . . . not resolution or capture format. There’s nothing DSLR about this camera. (Sure is a nice looking point-and-shoot, though.)

PG,
I’m well aware of what a DSLR is. This is what Canon has to say about it, “New G-Series Camera Gives Serious Photo Enthusiasts the Power of a Professional Digital SLR in a Point-and-Shoot Package”.

While it’s not a dSLR at all, they say it has the “power” of a dSLR. I own a Digital Rebel XT and I absolutely love it. But the down side is it’s bulky as hell especially when you add a 300mm lens on there. I need something to throw in my pocket, but I still want the ability to shoot high quality pictures in the RAW format, as well as still have access to the exact same modes as my dSLR (although I’ve noticed they’ve done away with the rarely used A-DEP mode). I’m definitely picking up one of these when they come out in the next month or so.
