$1.4 Million IBM Server Falls Off Forklift

D’oh! Some genius at a warehouse didn’t properly secure a server to a forklift and it fell off while it was being loaded into a truck. Federal contractor T.R. Systems’ employees must have really been dicking around, because had they known a $1.4 million server was just wrecked, I’m sure a few of them would be running in the other direction.

So how did it happen? According to a court papers filed by T.R. Systems, “The rear wheels of their forklift hit the raised surface at the entry door of the warehouse, causing the forklift to rock, and subsequently causing the server to rock. As a result of the rocking motion, the base of the pallet and the crate broke and the crate fell onto the curb, damaging the server packed inside” Now T.R. Systems says that it’s IBM’s fault for not packing the server up correctly. A silly suit by all standards, don’tcha think?

Happens quite frequently actually. I had a $300k HP magneto optical jukebox dropped from a forecliff from two stories up in the early 90s (building had no service elevator). Just recently I had another 400k fully packed Cisco 6513 show up with a nice 15 degree tilt to it.

Ouch. I’m sure somebody lost their head over that.

Its times like this that a union can save one’s ass. Assuming thats the case considering its a forklift operator with a federal contractor.

Actually, its times like this you hope your employees aren’t unionized so that you can suspend people; investigate what happened, and then fire people accordingly.

Didn’t they have insurance? If I was responsible for moving a $1.4 million server (or $1.4 million anything), you can bet your tail I’d have insurance.
