The PS2 Isn’t Even Close To Dying

I’m pretty sure this I’ve seen this thesis before, but who am I to argue with an Australian newspaper I’ve never heard of? The long and short of it is, the PS2 is a long ways away from tapping out. Sony likes to think the system has a good three to four years left, but developers are more likely to say that the number’s closer to two to three years. Either way, the system with the dumbest commercials ever is still kicking.

Now, numbers: the PS2 outsold the PS3 4:1 in the second quarter; over 100 million (!) consoles have been sold since its release in 2000.

And you may be wondering why developers are even bothering with the PS2. I know I am! Essentially, it’s free money. Compared to developing for the PS3 (or Xbox 360…), it costs pretty much nothing to develop for the PS2. Combine that with the amount of people still clutching to their PS2, developers and their publishers are sure to make a buck or two. Ninja Turtles made a few dollars on the PS2…

So yeah, I’m one of those still clutching to my PS2. I swear, it gets more use than the 360; I don’t even have a PS3. In fact, no one I know does.

  • Actually the game.com had the dumbest commercials ever. You know, the one with the midget making fun of the stupid gamers (who they’re trying to sell their product to). Sorry I couldn’t find a link. I thought the PS2 commercial that featured the PS9 was very good. It didn’t tell me anything about the PS2 at all, but it made me want to go out and buy one. If you’re going to make fun of playstation commercials the PS3 is the one with the worst ads, like the one with the baby crying. Its disturbing.

Are you nuts? It has the biggest install base of any console ever made so devs will keep making games for it as long as there are people buying them.

  • a little while back i sold off my ps2 thinking i was gonna buy a next gen console, however 6 or so months down the line and i have gone and bought a ps2 again!

i’d definitely like to see developers continue for at least another three years. when you look at all the factors like price, reliability, accessories available, selection of games the ps2 beats any next gen console hands down as far as i am concerned.

  • This concole is the king of the generation of gaming and still is so just to know that even if the ps3 is failing sony still has money on the ps2. just rreminds me sony does’nt suck.
