CrunchDeals: iPhone Owners Can Get a Refund

So the iPhone is now $399. That’s awesome, as that’s the perfect pricepoint for the device. But you feel foolish. You just bought an iPhone! Well fret not, early adopter, as many of you will be getting a refund.
Not all of you, sadly, are eligible. But if you bought your iPhone in the last 14 days, you can take it back for a price protection. If you paid $599 for your 8GB version at the AT&T store, you can take it back and get a $200 refund. They call it a return and resale, and they have to let you do it by their own policy. And don’t let them charge you the 10% restocking fee, as you’re taking your same phone with you.
If you’ve got a 4GB model in the last 14 days, you can take it back as well and exchange it for an 8GB model, as well as get a $100 refund less the $49 restocking fee. You’re basically doubling your storage and getting $50 to do so.
And be aggressive: the in-store folk are trained to maximize every dollar, so be assertive and tell them that it’s their policy that allows this.
And if you bought your iPhone more than 14 days ago, well, sucks to be you. We did tell you to wait, afterall.
Thanks, CB!

Bought my wife an 8gb for her b-day on July 25th. When I told her she had a way to recoup $200 she couldn’t have been happier. AN iphone and $200 in her pocket. Sweet!

Oh, yeah. (How thoughtless of me.) Thank you, Matt, for getting this info out so quickly. You’re a lifesaver.

Thank you so much for this information. I bought a 4 GB on Monday, wanting an 8gb. Now I am going to get $50 bucks back and double the size!

You guys should check with your credit card companies to see if they offer any sort of price protection. Some do, all the way up to 90 days, so many more people could be covered.

I just got back from the ATT store, I got the $200 refund, thank you so much-
it did require me to be very direct and quote a printout of your article-
at first he offered only a store credit but after some coaxing, and then he seemed
to have to print out the cashier’s manual, but finally he got me my $200
(see url for pic)
Then I bought a new iphone 8gig in a separate transaction, and it came up
as still $599.. then he fixed that somehow and I got a new 8g iphone
for $399 + tax :)

If you were smart enough to put the original purchase on a credit card that has a good price protection policy, you can get the refund that way. I already called my card company, and since they offer 90 day price protection, I’m good - even having bought the phone the day after it came out! They’re refunding me the money on my next statement.

@ Jason Smale: Probably not a refund per se, but you should be able to return your 4GB and use the credit to upgrade to an 8GB at $100 less than your 4GB cost. Let us know how it works out, yah?

Upset, more like pissed off. Learned my lesson not to ever run and buy a new state of the art gizmo. Especially from APPLE. I called my Wells Fargo Bank and because I purchased under debit I do not qualify for the good price protectin plan, which blows. I wonder if we are able to start a class action law-suit? The price should have not dropped that fast. It is almost as if APPLE knew they can sucker a few then if sales dropped then drop the price. So do you think we have a legit case?

I take my previous comment back, American Express does cover the claim for the difference, you can not call the 800# on the card though, you have to go thru the buyers protection area t 800-297-8019

the question is……do we even like the iPhone? I have one got it in July for a bday gift…..i thought at first it was very neat….but actually as a phone it is cumbersome and i gotta say I liked my smaller phone way better.

@ Dania -
You have a negative case, if there is such a thing. You’d be paying Apple’s legal bills. And I can assure you that their lawyers are not cheap.
Honestly - are you joking? A class action case because a company dropped the price of a product? An electronic product, no less? Look around your house - every single electronic item, from you microwave to your VCR to your DVD player to your toaster, you can replace with an equivalent for a fraction of what you paid for it. That’s life. You were an early adopter, and you paid for it.

Hi all,
Just to let everybody know, if you are persistant enough and bought an iPhone (at least an 8 GB) from an AT&T store from August 22 to September 4, you can get $200 plus tax refunded. It took me THREE visits to finally accomplish this, but they have to do it. On my first visit I was told to call Apple, who told me to email Apple, who told me to go back to where I bought it. I did this and they refused, trying to tell me the first date of eligibility was August 23 for AT&T, not 22, even though I showed them the information from the Apple website. They claimed this policy was on the AT&T website but the only thing I saw was a link to the Apple website which says August 22. I called AT&T customer service and they said it was official policy to refund the $200 price protection. They actually had to put information on my account instructing the AT&T store to refund me the $200, and on a third visit they finally relented, saying the company policy had been “updated”.
So I would say if you bought from an AT&T on a date eligible for price protection, go back to the AT&T store and if they don’t give you the refund, call AT&T customer service right there in the store. Don’t give up, and remember to do it by September 19!
