iPod Touch Is Not The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread

So… new iPod… pretty cool, pretty cool. Except, despite what the fanboys will tell you, it ain’t perfect. Nope.
Far from it. What do I mean?
Yeah, what do I mean? John? Anyone?
• There’s no FM radio support (without third-party accessories). I’m pretty sure I can buy a $200 DAP in Chinatown that has FM radio support. Is it a battery issue? (But then how did they get Wi-Fi in there…?) Or does Apple simply not want me to be able to listen to my morning radio program of choice on my iPod? LAme, Apple.
• Lousy codec support. OK, so the 16GB found in the top-of-the-line Touch isn’t a whole lot of space (more on that later), but it’s still enough to hold a couple of FLAC albums. And no, no one uses Apple Lossless to encode their music. Still no OGG Vorbis, no WMA (even san DRM), etc. The iPod is about to turn six years old. You’d think Apple would at least throw the OSS community OGG support. It surely can’t be a processor speed issue anymore.
• No way to record audio. Again, probably not a feature too many folks would use, but would it really kill Apple to throw us a bone?
• 16GB is a little on the small size. I have acquired a whole lot more music than will fit on a puny 16GB flash drive. You’re basically telling power users that they’ll have to buy both an iPod Classic and iPod Touch if they want to be totally satisfied. Yawn.
• It doesn’t come out until… er, we don’t know, actually. A “few weeks” is all we know. Quoth Matt Hickey, “I don’t have one yet.” That’s a problem, to be sure.
Minor criticims, admittedly. But please don’t think that the Touch is the end all, be all as far as PMPs go.
But it’s still pretty impressive, all things considered.

It is “neat” but I was relieved they didn’t release something I “had to have.” I would be more apt to buy one of the new Nano. I have a 5th gen iPod 60 GB. It is almost full of audio and video. I need a whole lot more than 16 GB as my primary media device. The 160 GB iPod “Classic” was good to hear. I would likely buy one of those before the “touch.”
And nope, I don’t have an iPhone either. I would imagine there are hundreds of thousands of people who are pissed about the iPhone price drop. I would be….

I for one have now lost the urge to buy an iPhone.
Some of the features I want in a smartphone is missing from the iPhone, and all of the features of the iPhone that I want are now in the iPod Touch.
Which I hadn’t bought an iPod of any kind (except as gifts for other) yet because of some of the reasons stated above, mainly the limited video format support (I want to play my Xvid and Divx files)

Hey, it may not be the best thing since sliced bread or canned beverages but there is a very real chance it could cannibalize iPhone sales, given the fact it’s little more than an iPhone that underwent a vasectomy.
Anecdotally, I know more than few folks that plan on buying a Touch that otherwise would have purchased iPhones. Apple just gave them one very compelling reason NOT to switch wireless carriers.

The one point you make that makes sense to me is the audio recording feature. If they put in a microphone, you could, theoretically, run skype or something similiar, and then that would cut into their iPhone market

I couldn’t wait for the ipod touch to come out. I was all ready to buy it, until I found out it was only 16 GB. I want an ipod touch that can fit my entire music collection and be able to put videos on it. 16 GB is worthless. Definitely NOT purchasing this one. Here’s to hoping they come to their senses and release and ipod touch with a regular hard drive and over 100 GB.

Microphone would make it possible to run VOIP on the phone (see the Jajah Mobile service that runs inside cellphone browsers, for instance), which would make AT&T very unhappy, and probably make T-Mobile unhappy as well.

@Interiot - exactly, this is going to make a kickass wifi phone someday. Everything is there except the mic and speaker..

Yes. I use Apple Lossess to encode some of the songs I ripped from my CDs. I have no intention of enabling others in stealing.

I think Apple made a mistake releasing the iphone before the ipod touch. They could’ve marketed it as an upgrade to the ipod touch and thus justify it’s price and avoid the inevitable price drop backlash.
I agree with Outlaw - 16GB is not enough. I have a 30GB and i thought at the time that that should be enough for my music files - boy, was i wrong!! I’ll wait for a bigger storage cap on this one.

I think a great and easily implementable feature would be the ability to stream and/or download the tracks in your iTunes library to your iPod touch over WiFi, similar to how Orb works. That would alleviate a lot of the storage issues — 16GB would be plenty of space.

I’m someone who lives and dies by email, and if anything was going to get me to to ditch my smart phone for an iPhone it was a slick email UI.
I would like to see is the ability to do email when I’m connected to a wireless network with an iPod touch.
Is that feature there and I just missed it?

The iPod touch is fine by me! It’s the long awaited Video-iPod alright, and the setbacks, y’all know it’s just Mr.J’s marketing schemes. That’s been proven long time ago.

The FM radio criticism is stupid. People have been whining about that since the first iPod came out; but really, for 99% of people the simple fact is this: if radio had anything worth listening to, they wouldn’t need an iPod in the first place. You can bet that Apple’s done the market research to prove it.
But I agree about the storage. I want an 80GB iPod Touch. With open APIs.

Things I’d most like to see on the iPod Touch, which I don’t think it has:
- sharing iTunes content over WiFi (like a hand held Apple TV)
- syncing over WiFi
- Last.fm player, and scrobbling over WiFi
- More goddam storage
- More goddam battery life

The recording thing is huge for me- I am sticking with my iRiver with line in recording until Ipod does it.
And pitch control on playback- someone has to hack that in. Pleeze! Ill buy two!

Excuse for not having a radio” is just that- an excuse. Almost every major MP3 manufacturer since the early 2000’s has FM radio + voice recording included in even their lowest priced players. It isn’t the most practical feature, but if you only have 8-16GB, you can get sick of your songs on it pretty quick. I like the Touch only for one reason - WiFi.
I think the latest Creative Zen and the 6-month old Cowon D2 blows the Nano away, and has many more features the higher priced Touch does not. Like expandable memory & playing many kinds of video/audio formats.
Sad to see so many blind followers annualy bite on Steve’s forbidden fruit. It seems like Apple intends us to upgrade mp3 players just as fast as our cell phones.

Just few things:
The new ipod touch is the coolest thing ever made, expecially for people like me that hate to spend 60 frikkin bucks for the phone service since i make 2 calls a day (when it happens) and receive maybe 10 calls a week!
now what i hate?
1) the nano with video???? Creative make a good player like that (and much cheaper ) since long time ago….much better the old nano, since for 200 bucks you can get a zen:m with 30 Gb of space, adn for 350 a 80 Gb zen:W with bigger screen, 80 Gb and more formats and codecs available!
2) storage space: 16 GB? no expansion port for extra memory? not even a frikkin SD slot? are you crazy or what? do you think to keep prices low using less memory and not putting a hd so you can make it slim? and you think that somebody will buy it? instead i buy a iphone without the phone contract and wait for a crack that will let me use it with a pre paid card!
3) the interface of the new ipods….is totally ripped off from the creative zen products! except cover flow is the same! cmon guys…stealing stuff will not help to reduce prices, expecially when after 7 years you are still stuck with apple formats without including WMV, OGG or even DIVX!
4) where is my radio? i use it, expecially when i have to listen something and i am not at home! adn is true that you can listen the online radio…but if you are not in a hotspot?
5) why can’t i record audio? how many kids and students would use it as digital recorder? do i need to buy 3 separate devices to have all the functions that i need instead of having a single device? or is possible to ahave a frikkin single device?
6) where the heck is the mail application? take off frikkin youtube and give me the mail app taht i can sync with my desktop app on my powerbook!!
Apple…you really sucks when is a matter of making something different from OS!

Ipod Touch for just 8gb and 16gb. Geesh, after getting used to a big capacity on my current Ipod, why would I move to something that would make me dump almost all my music and video. It may look nice and maybe make me look cool, but with such huge sacrifice! I just can’t believe why Apple started with such a small storage! Bet they will be releasing something bigger a few months from now which would make owners of this new Ipod Touch weeping like what is happening to those who got the Itouch for $600+.

While complaining about the lack of the following features:
1) FM tuning
2) Other codecs
3) Audio recording
… is very much beating a dead horse; I mean, come on, everyone in the Slashdot community has been whining about that since the first generation (or at least it sure *seems* that way). The other points have some merit, but…
Flash media: expensive. If you’ve seen the price of the Flash hard drives out there, you know you’re not going to see a Flash HD replacement (like 32gb) in anything Apple makes for $299/399.
Next, timing: end of the month… er, big deal? Hey, some of us are still waiting for OS 10.5.
I only wish there was more applications wedged in there like Mail, an SD slot for adding things like photos on the fly, and for those people who can make their own damn ringtones with an audio program - a way of adding ring tones that doesn’t require you *buying* songs for ringtone use. I admit, it’s silly - as are many of the geeks who complain about spending $3 after they’ve spent $400 on the device - but I like to customize my tones from sampled sounds and music. I also second the Wifi shared library, it’d be great for party DJing / AirTunes substitute.

I’d like to see Camera and voice recording function including in here. Adding an SD slot would be good also!

Why why why does apple continue to avoid including FM radio in their iPods? I have a Zen just so that I can have radio when I run. It’s frustrating, Apple totally cheaps out on the extra features and goes for the glam instead.

The people that dont want to buy one, dont, but dont winge about what you want on it and waiting for the next gen, they’ve never had a radio on any ipod why would they start now? the touch isn’t perfect for every single individual, if you want storage get a classic, if you want small get a nano or another brand altogether, if you want an unbelieveable interface and a 3.5 inch touchscreen with wifi get a touch. I dont see the problem, get off the bandwagon and open your eyes….

Got one today. PCWorld Tottenham Ct Rd selling them ahead of launch day. 16Gb. Fun for 10 mins. Then you realise it won’t play the vids you’ve got on your hard drive. Then you realise that youTube integration is about the only online streaming vid site you can access (and YT sucks for picture quality). Why no divx codec support so you can access eg stage6? Then you get frustrated that the screen is too small for it to work as a proper touch screen when browsing the net. then you realise you just dropped £269 on what is a very pretty dud. Anyone want to buy mine? then you realise that your ipod is a smaller and neater way to listen to audio and holds your entire record collection. Then you realise again that none of your videos will play on the sodding thing. Seriously - anyone want to buy this pile of disappointment?

I just got my ipod touch today. I think its great, but am disappointed with a bunch of features. 1) You can’t use it in disk mode. 2) I was really looking forward to streaming audio around the house. 3) You tube is not what i want to be stuck with. I was hoping that you could surf the internet and watch videos and listen to online radio. I’m sure the touch will be hacked and all these great features will be available. Until then the touch is to limited.

16G, y izit still small? even only 2Gig, would you listen everything? U hv lot more things to do than listening to music only.
Talking about the capacity, 16G is already $399, if its like 80G, it would be times more expensive. How many people can afford to buy?
Well, im quite interested since i dun need dat much capacity.
