There isn’t much in the way of news today thanks to Apple. I’ll do my best to stop reporting on Apple news after this. Cleverboy over at macrumors has found a way to get free ringtones by changing the file extension. Oh joy!
Update: If you’ve recently updated iTunes then you won’t be able to use the methodology shown here unless you add the following instructions into the fray. Do the steps mentioned after the jump and then change the file extension from m4r to m4a and you should be good to go. Let us know if it works out.

Not sure if someone has shared this, but like every other audio “distinction” in iTunes, “ringtones” are no different. They are AAC files with a special name. In this case, the extension is “M4R”.
1. To add a ringtone to your iPhone, using Windows Explorer or the Finder just duplicate and rename any AAC file to be “M4R”, then double-click on it. This file will be added to your iTunes library automatically.
2. Now, click on your iPhone in iTunes, and go to the ringtone section. You should now see your new ringtone. If you want to be sure about the sync, feel free to click “selected ringtones” and check off the file explicitly, though this shouldn’t be required.
3. Now SYNC your phone. You’re Done!

fucking itunes patched it, i downloaded the new version thinking that they only patched the old way of uploading ringtones but no they patched this one too. This piece of shit phone, i thought it was so great, then 3 months later it drops 200 and after that they want me to 1 pay for music and 2 the music i purchase pay again to create a ringtone out of it? I cant wait till the prada comes out or even the g-phone. This is the biggest piece of shit!
any updates on how to get this to work on itunes 7.4.2
maybe you guys shouldn’t hack the iphone but I do agree that apple should let people use there own ringtones to put on the iphone but the gphone is going to be shitty compared to the iphone and the prada might be worth it but I still think the iphone is a better choice than anyother phone out there or even coming out soon
doesn’t work :(
I got it to work, and it pops up in the ringtones tab on my itunes and even in the tab when I hook the phone up….but it doesn’t sync to my phone. It states that the songs cannot be played…any idea what to do???

What you gotta do is go into control panel go to folder options and find something that says hide folder extenstions or something and uncheck it then u can change it to m4r
this does work im using 1.1.3 and it works but when i put one song ok lets say i put stan by eminem 28 sec then i would put kim by eminem 28 sec it would make the song twice so i would have 2 copies of stan and no copys of kim can someone help with this
worked fine for me.
convert your selected tune (mp3 etc) to m4a format first then rename to ???.m4r and double click on it – itunes picked it up and added it to the phone – voila – thats simple!!!
There’s a much more detailed step by step tutorial on http://www.outerspaceringtones.com
I have tested this one out fully and it works perfect for me.
stay you girl sea
make sure your ringtone is < 30 seconds in length – it will show in one of the tabs in iTunes but will not sunc to be a ringtone – I edited mine to < 30 seconds and voila – it can be a bit of a pain, renameing, and then all I did was literally double clicked on it on my windows desktop and it appeared in itunes – boom boom!
