I’ll be the first to admit that I wanted an RFID chip in my hand for some stupid reason. Maybe it was so I could stumble home drunk at 4am without the need for keys, who knows. All I know is that I won’t be trying to mess with that shit anymore. Seems a study from the 1990s has come back into the limelight and it’s not reassuring anyone. A series of veterinary and toxicology tests were run on animals with chip implants and sure enough, they developed tumors.
Now there’s a big mess because one side says it’s OK (FDA and VeriChip Corp.) while the other cries foul (Retired toxicologic pathologist). Currently, about 2000 people have RFID chips in their bodies, meaning we’ll see in the next few years just how dangerous they’ll end up being.
I’m never getting a random chip implanted in my body. No matter how cool it sounds (like Vince’s example of opening your door without a key)…there’s always a chance of malfunction. Plus…I don’t want the government to have more control over what I can and can’t do.
i’m guessing rfid chips have become safer to implant since the 90’s, so I’m not worried about it.
