I remember when the United Kingdom used to run this stupid planet, now it’s all about banning anything that might offend anyone or, in this case, draws “too much” electricity. Yeah, OK. Apparently, if we want to trust the UK Sun, government leaders in the UK will propose a ban on electronic devices that suck up too much electricity, draining the lifestream from the planet or some other nonsense. Plasma TVs are said to be among the biggest offenders, with many of them “falling foul” of proposed standards.
Oh, and there are plans to eliminate altogether the standby function of electronic devices. Awesome.
Hooray for knee jerk reactions!
Plans to ban plasma TV’s [The Sun]

It’s not a knee-jerk reaction. I miss being able to turn devices “off” – not only cause it worthlessly sucks a crazy amount of power across the country, but also cause it costs me money I’d rather have in my pocket. As for banning Plasmas, however, I can’t get on board with that – not until LCDs mature a bit more anyway. You’ll have to wrestle my Panny 42″ from my dead body.
The current standby functionality provided by most entertainment devices sucks beyond belief. To make the situation slightly better in my home I purchased a couple of radio control adapters. I can turn off devices with a click on a remote and the devices are actually switched off.
A suggested ban on plasmas (though I wouldn’t recommend anyone uses the Sun as reference material) would only serve to alienate. Research into lower power consuming alternatives e.g. OLED would be a better approach.
I think that standby is a good enough function, but not really necessary, I don’t really mind what they do, I guess banning standby might make a difference to the planet, who knows.
As for banning plasmas, that seems unlikely. I suggest you take whatever “The Sun” says with a large pinch (read bucket) of salt. The Sun recently informed us that Putin himself had ordered an army of man eating ladybirds on the country in retaliation for expelling a few Russian diplomats from the country… yes, you read right, man eating ladybirds. The Sun is not so much a newspaper, but more a comic with too many words.
