Lookin’ For Some (iPod) Touch? Best Buy Just Got Them

I just got home from picking up a laptop at my local Best Buy store and, while cruising over to check out the MP3 player selection, I happened upon this little number.

According to the sales guy I talked to, most of the stores around the Minneapolis/St. Paul area got them in this afternoon, special delivery. This was confirmed by a manager I spoke with who said, “They came in this afternoon and I heard yelling in the back of the store. People were kinda freaking out. We had no idea we were getting them. It kind of works like the Nintendo Wii. They just ship stuff to us whenever they have more stock and we put it out on the floor. No warning.”

The guy I spoke with told me that the stores around the metro area only had the 16GB version in stock but that some of the more rural locations had a few 8GB units. The whole deal kind of happened under the radar so if you’ve been patiently waiting until the end of September, they’re here now, Best Buy has ‘em, and nobody really knows that Best Buy has ‘em yet.

Unboxing and review coming soon.

  • I seriously recommend you to remove your personal info from that receipt, along with the serial number of that thing.

  • Yeah, got a little excited there. Thanks for the heads up.

  • GAH I want one! Let me know how it is! I still don’t know which to decide (touch or classic)

  • As far as I know ALL APPLE STORES HAVE THEM, I went to the one in Costa Mesa, Ca. this afternoon but they had already sold out so had the one in Fashion Island. The manager there said they might get more tomorrow but he wasn’t sure. The strange thing was there was only one Ipod touch displayed, and it was sorta hidden, I had to ask an employee if there was one in the store and he pointed it out.

  • @Mark: It’s pretty cool. Very, very slim. I purchased a song and it was done downloading before I could even get to the screen to watch its progress. It’s kind of weird, psychologically, to use it because of the built-in web browser and store. My brain couldn’t wrap around it at first. I have a Nokia 770 that I use just to cruise around the internet from time to time and I now have basically all of the features that I used to use in the 770 right on my iPod. No disrespect to the Nokia 770 and 800 — the extent to which you can hack those things is pretty amazing.

I’m hedging my bets that Apple will someday release a media server add-on for iTunes that’ll allow you to grab the songs and videos in your iTunes library from halfway around the world. That, for me, would be the ultimate feature and it’d make the limited storage less of an issue.

That being said, the UI is pretty different from a normal iPod because there’s no scroll wheel. The finger flicking thing is cool but I don’t think it’s as easy to use as scrolling. I’ve overshot things plenty of times already just by flicking my finger too fast.

So I’d say that if you want a device for the sole purpose of listening to music and you want to be able to load tons and tons of files onto it, the Classic might be a better bet. But for someone like me who will use the extra features as much or more as the actual music playing part, the touch is pretty solid. I don’t carry my MP3 players with me wherever I go, though. I bought this to use in the car occasionally and to take on airplanes. I think it’ll serve my purposes pretty well.

  • I wonder when there will be the time when there are hacks for the Touch which will allow it to share music with friends (just like Zune does) but without digital restriction. *dream*

  • I am really interested in the iPod Touch. I have a Palm TX (I know I am old school, lol) that I would like to replace with this. However, I am disappointed that the calender feature isn’t as good as it could be. I don’t have or use MS Outlook to sync with. It would be nice if it had a nice scheduler/calender on the touch.

  • “and nobody really knows that Best Buy has ‘em yet”
    well, now they do. idiot

  • Are they available in all best buy stores because i called my two local stores and they didnt say they had any

  • The sales guy I spoke to said that some of the stores got them on Thursday, even. He wasn’t sure if ALL stores got them but he told me that they’d all start getting them around the same time.

Just a quick note, you can use Best Buy’s in-store pickup option to check the stock at your local stores. Go to the website (direct link: http://www.bestbuy.com/site//olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat102000050013&type=category) and click “Check preferred store availability” to see if they’re available in your area. If they are, you can buy one through the site and they’ll set it aside for you to go pick up at the customer service counter in the store.

  • Cool. I already own a ipod touch 16gb. It’s very good!
