Meizu M8 GUI Screenshots: What Chinese Piracy Problem?

30da691459.gifI’ve said this over and over again in multiple forums, but I’ll repeat it here. Chinese technology companies have to stop intellectual piracy. From the look and feel of the Chinese Facebook to the plethora of Chinese-made Rolex knock-offs on eBay, Chinese design is derivative to the extreme. I don’t know what it is about the mentality — perhaps it’s a “They’re winning, so we can win using their formula” — but it’s embarrassing, unprofessional, and ridiculously obvious.
So here we are looking at screens from the Meizu M8 media player. If you’ve ever used the iPhone, you will recognize that this company has stolen everything from the form factor to the UI and workflow. Instead of hitching their wagon to a star, Meizu CEO Jack Wong hitched it to a freaking donkey cart.

This device will fail. It will not sell in the U.S. and will sell a few million in Asia and then disappear along with the company. China, please. I know it’s easier to make things that look like other things, but it’s futile. Make all the crappy handbags and DVDs you want, but in a knowledge economy, piracy is tantamount to admitting you want to remain in the industrial age.

  • japan and korea went through similar phrases before they became what they are today so I think this is something that will pass in a few yrs time…

  • so what?! I think it is nice, cheap and good looking. I’ll buy one maybe. Hear that the M8 will have more functions than iPhone.

  • Pretty blatant copy of the iPhone screens.

You’d think they could do better. Of course, if it has multiple delete, copy/paste/etc, then they did do better.

You should edit out your comment about the Meizu company going away, though. Not likely at all.

  • All the power to the Chinese! When Microsoft copied the look and feel of the Mac OS and called it Windows, it was not judged to be copyright violation. When apple copied the mouse and the graphic use interface from Xerox- Palo Alto it was not considered copyright violation. Now a Chinese company gets an American product and makes a similar but better product, and y’all want to considered that copyright violation? Hogwash!

  • I agree JeFree, and the Iphone is a copy of HTC products like qtek 2020…

  • I am pretty happy with the copy. I am not going to spent a few hundreds bucks on a phone that is exclusive to some networks only. So screw you and Go MEIZUUU!

  • I agree that it is not right for a company to just steal other company’s intellectual property. But Biggs is being an idiot thinking a company will fail simply b/c they copy another company’s product. (Does a little company with a little product call Windows ring a bell?)

In the end, most consumers only care about getting quality product at a cheap price. From what I’ve read, Meizu does make quality product. Even if it’s not quite as good as iPod in some area, it is actually better than ipod in other areas.

Beside, Apple is getting to anti-consumer with its virtual monopoly with iPod. It’s good to have competition like Meizu to keep Apple from continue selling a $400 phone for $600, while still forcing you to sign 2 year contract with a horrific phone company and brick the phones for any apple customers who dared to try and open up the iphone.

I don’t like Chinese government for doing only lip service in enforcing intellectual properties. But Apple is not getting any sympathy from me. We need more companies like Meizu to help fighting the Apple bully.

  • whoever wrote this is an ignorant dumb f***er who had clearly not researched this product at all. HS made a good point to start with that japan and korea went through similar phases to start with. Meizu has seen steady growth over the past few years and recieved acclaim and great reviews for it’s m6 miniplayer. It has borrowed styling from apple but are you tryting to tell me tech companies don’t copy each others design all the time? you obviously have no clue about tech at all then, which leads me to ask why are you even employed on this blog? Lets have a quick look at the spec too:

The meizu m8 will use the ARM11 667MHz processor which is actually superior and faster to that used in the iphone. Samsung flash memory and has a GUI built on the latest windows CE 6.0 architecture. As well as having many functions the tight c***s at apple would not dream of offering you, as they strive to monopolise the market with their closed platforms under the guise of originality and innovation. How in any way is this a cheap chinese clone? these are all high quality components. Windows CE has been used in portable devices many years before the iphone or the ipod were even invented. Just because it’s chinese does not make it cheap crap. You really need to check your facts. In addition how can you talk about piracy as being futile? it is multibillion dollar industry and millions of people make loads of money from it. Have you been living in the dark for the last 50 yrs?
