Comments on: New MacBook, Less DVD Drive?

I’m not sure how I feel about the lack of DVD. I rarely use one away from my desk. What I do want is a powerful computer skeleton that is easy to travel with. Back at the office I want it to drive a large monitor and connect to a bank of fast hard drives/wacom tablet/etc.

I want the 17in MacBook Pro that can drive a 30in monitor, but in a 13in form factor. I think many a road warrior/consultant/freelancer is looking for this.

I really don’t think technology is in the place to give up dvd drives.

Too difficult to rip dvd’s to hard drives with all the DRM and encryption, and the relatively expensive annual fees for online storage…as opposed to a “cost free” dvd player.

But of course they could still try it.

I am currently in the market for a new laptop. I have been looking at the Macbook and MBP as well as some PC’s. I was not impressed with the looks of the Macbook and MBP vs. others. What I do like is the hardware and software on the Mac’s. I was very impressed by the looks of an HP laptop I was eyeing at CompUSA. Beautiful screen and a good hardware set. For about $1400 it was similar in specs to the MBP. But I want the Mac for the software that is installed.

I wouldn’t want a Mac without a DVD drive. I want to be able to watch DVD’s more than I care about the software. I don’t want to lug around some external DVD drive.

It would be only OK if Apple could figure out a way to re-install MacOS (which is funnily on a CD/DVD) in a appropriate way. I have an external DVD-writer here so that won’t be that much of a damage to me, but I wonder if I will be okay with that on-the-way… *mmh*
