Rum0r: $400, 40GB PS3 on November 16?

Could a $399, 40GB PS3 be on the way in time for the holidays? Well, sure it could, but now people are connecting the dots, citing internal sources and playing out scenes from the movie “All The President’s Men” in the process. Sony recently filed a patent that describes a new model of the PS3. Everything that makes the PS3 worth owning—Blu-ray, wireless controllers, etc.—are included in the new model’s description, but couple that with deep background sources and now we have a story.

It seems good ol’ Ars has friends in high places, friends who tell the Web site that Sony plans to launch the $400 PS3 on November 16. Sony has been watching sales of the lower ned PS3 all this time, and while it could have announced the $400 PS3 at the Tokyo Games Show, it didn’t want to rock the boat, so to speak.

A $400 PS3? Yeah, that appeals to me, in that that’s getting close to the price I’d pay for a stand-alone Blu-ray player (one with the ability to play PS3 games, lackluster though they may be thus far).

$400 would be pretty hard to pass up for me if the new PS3 still included the Wi-Fi and card reader. A HDMI cable would be real nice too, but Sony probably figures anyone who ONLY has $400 to spend on the future of consumer electronics is just going to use the composite cables they include to hook it up to their 27-inch console TV anyway.

If this holds to be true, I think it’d be a great decision for Sony. It’ll put the PS3 back on the competitive market against the other consoles as the $400 - 40GB PS3 would be identical to the 80GB version except a lot cheaper. With the hard drive easily swapable.

I’ve read around other articles about this, and most comments say basically the same thing. People would like this move and will probably sell a lot more PS3’s.

I’ve already got one so I’m kind of screwed out of 200 bucks. But none the less, it’ll be interesting to see where this goes.

I wonder if Sony has done any other changes (if this is true). I’d love to see something else other than a different hard drive.
