Many have tried the controls ABOVE the screen thing, and all have failed, because in the end you don't want to have your own hand in the way when trying to navigate the phone with one hand (which is essential while driving your car or texting your ex while banging her best friend). It's not even thin, and it has the looks of a 90's every day digital calendar. I guess if you want to own an overpriced mp3 player with speaker instead of getting a speaker dock for your iPod you should go ahead and buy it right now!
