While the jurors were (arguably) intelligent, they're not appropriate for this situation.

one of them described himself as computer illiterate.
2 purportedly did not own computers.

Surely these people are not capable about making an informed judgement call about such an issue.

Mind you, the lady is inequivocably stupid for acting in the manner she did at trial.

I can't figure it out. I guess people start to believe their own lies so much that they truly believe they didn't do anything wrong.

C'mon. If you can't afford the consequences of your actions, then don't pirate music. Specifically, don't share the music over Kazaa. Furthermore, if you get an IM from the music industry telling you to stop pirating...then for Pete's sake, stop. Or, if you find yourself in litigation with the RIAA, don't let it go to trial - settle! Finally, don't let your only defense be based on the premise that anyone could have sat at your computer and pirated...not just you.

Sheesh, I won't even go into the flim-flam she tried to pull by producing a different/formatted hard drive rather than the one she was requested to produce. Although, it never even made it to trial. Honestly, jurors are pretty smart. I'll bet an honest dollar all of them were young once and tried to fudge the truth a little bit every now and then.

I think it was a jury, not the judge, not the court - a jury.

Hey, if this leads to more record companies going DRM-free, then ligitate. If an army of lawyers acting on behalf of the recording industry helps to kill DRM, then bring em on...

While I don't necessarily appreciate the "strongarm" tactics that the record companies are using, I do think it's their right to protect the work that artists have produced under the law of copyright.

I'm sorry, but protection of intellectual work is one of the foundations of this country. How frustrated would you be if every post you made on your blog was instantaneously scraped by 1,000 other blogs? Sooner or later you'd just give up blogging.

The record industry may not have done this the appropriate or considerate way, but I think the law is sound. The punishment seems steep, but the fundamentals are all there.
