Sony’s New Slim PSP Is Selling Like Hotcakes

And by hotcakes, I mean the iPhone. The company announced today that it has sold over 500,000 Playstation Portable units in Japan during the two weeks since its debut. Funny thing is, Sony has sold more PSP Slims in the past two weeks than it ever did with the original version of the system. I suppose the emerging pattern of “thinner is better” really applies to technology and sales.

Don’t even think for a second that Nintendo is worried though. 13 million DS handhelds compared to the 500,000 PSPs? Not even close. However, if the PSP stays popular for a few more months, it could at least put a major dent in Nintendo’s sales. Who do you think will end up selling more systems?

  • Nintendo of course. Those damn Pokemon games.

  • Diamond is my favorite :-)

  • Like the Sony homebois I is, I’m goin’ wit the PSP.

  • Sony hasn’t sold 500,000 total units, they sold 500,000 slims in two weeks. Believe it or not, the PSP is actually doing very well with better than 25 million sold worldwide, 7 million of those in Japan (not counting the Slim). That’s about half the DS’s sold, but it’s still a robust community with a LOT of games and developers to support it.

I don’t understand why every article needs to be about hatin’ on one console or another. Can’t we all just be happy that a gaming console is successful?

  • Probably DS, but to be honest a PSP coupled with homebrew would kick any DS’s ass.
People don’t even realize what PSP’s can do with a little homebrew and custom firmware.
Try playing nearly any ps1, NES, SNES, N64, GBA, GB/GBC, or even DS game on a DS.
