You're right about Google video and Google chat, but how can you honestly say that Google maps is third to Mapquest and Yahoo? It blows Yahoo out of the water and is only being beat by mapquest because the term 'Mapquesting' has entered into our parlance, no matter that Google maps is actually more user friendly than Mapquest. I'm not even going to try to get into Google Maps' new "Street View" mode, which I'm sure you haven't had a chance to check out.

And if you're curious as to why people think Google is innovative, then perhaps it is because no one has introduced you to Google Earth, a product which has revolutionized the way we think about not only road maps, but what we can do with satellite imaging.

I am actually surprised that Google is consider so innovative. Apart from the search engine; none of their products have made any marks. Ofcourse, their search engine is a great product but it still wasn't the first company to do so.
Lets examine which products from google are so famous:
1. Gmail: Trails yahoo, hotmail, aol etc..
2. Google gears: apart from 5 universities no one has actually adopted the product. Atleast none of the fortune 1000 companies.
3. Orkut: It is not even top10 social networks in the US.
4. Finance portal: It has good content but you'll laugh the kind of discussions that take place in that forum. Also, nowhere near yahoo/msn finance, cnn money etc...
5. Picasa: Nowhere near in terms of reach and features compare to Flickr, Shutterfly etc..
6. Google Talk: It is similar to products that we used in late 90s.
7. Google video: Another failed attempt by google; ultimately had to buy youtube.
8. News portal: Again not even in top 10 news portals
9. Maps: It is still distant 3rd to Yahoo maps and mapquest.
The list goes on and on.......I think just because AdSense is there on every other website; people think Google is the most innovative company. But, the fact is that it is a one trick pony. No doubt that they make billions from that one trick and is very successful over the years.

Innovation isn't exactly the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Microsoft... hopefully they actually mean it this time.
