I know this is off-topic, but bear with me. For Xmas last year, my little brother gave me an iTunes gift card. I’d actually not used it yet, and I just ran across it in a drawer. Since we’re talking about music and iTunes today, I figured I’d let you guys pick out my new music.
See, I need something new. I’ve had the same 400 or so songs on my iPod for about three months now. I have Imperial Teen, The All Girl Summer Fun Band, Band of Horses, Sonic Youth, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Pulp, Metric (whom I’m seeing tonight), and My Bloody Valentine, among others. That list will hopefully give you a compass as to where my tastes lie. So I ask you, readers with taste, what should I look at?

OK smarty pants…who is so much better than the Beatles…Oasis? Blur?
Anyway check out XTC and Small Faces on your iTunes.
Cold War Kids and Tokyo Police Club…
@ Drew: I do love the small faces, I’ll make sure to check them out again. XTC was always a little, I don’t know, something for me. While they’re not my type, I did like what they were doing.
@ Chucky: TPC for the win!
Where to begin! I’ll confess up front that not all are a great match. However, break out and try something new.
Interpol, The Decemberists, Long Blondes, Arcade Fire, Every Move A Picture, The Good, The Bad, The Queen, The National, The Thermals, Tapes n’ Tapes.
definitely TPC. i have a couple recommendations, i’ll post them when i get to my music vault.
I don’t know where you got the graphic that accompanied this “article” but it includes Jets to Brazil’s “Four Cornered Night”. All three of Jets to Brazil’s albums are fantastic and I would highly recommend them. “Orange Rhyming Dictionary”, “Four Cornered Night”, and “Perfecting Loneliness.” Also, I would recommend “All Hail West Texas” by The Mountain Goats and “The Decline of” by British Sea Power.
@ Grant, yah, they’re one of my favorite bands. That’s an actual screen cap of my actual iTunes coverflow. I also love Mountain Goats and BSP. I actually saw the Goats just a few months ago, it was a great show.
@ Scott: Interpol’s a little stiff for me, but they’re not bad. Love Arcade Fire to pieces, and Tapes n’ Tapes. And the thermals. But the Decemberists aren’t as good as they were. That being said, Mariner’s Revenge Song is one of the absolute most amazing songs I’ve ever, ever heard.
May I suggest expanding your tastes, but since I have an amazing talent of recommending music based off of nothing, I bet you will like Bill Withers (The Same Man You Have Always Loved), and The Dandy Warhols (13 tales of urban Bohemia, it’s amazing)
but here is a short list of my favorite albums that I’m sure almost anyone would enjoy
Days to Come by Bonobo (Jazz/Trip-Hop)
Pocket Symphony by Air (Ambient/Nu-Jazz, very relaxing and fun to listen to)
In Our Nature by Jose Gonzalez (Folk/Alternative)
The Reminder by Feist (Pop,???)
Felt Mountain by Goldfrapp (trip-hop)
Sigur Ros (post-rock, it all sort of sounds the same)
Historie de Melody by Serge Gainsbourg (amazing, revolutionary piece of music)
Last Broadcast by Doves (Very Climatic Rock)
here is my last.fm page

Pixies Doolittle or Surfer Rosa
Eric Jerardi, Nate McDonough
Hey Hickey,
I’ve been listening to Augie March and the new Manu Chao. Don’t forget Big Business. That new record rocks.
spoon, kasabian, architecture in helsinki, arctic monkeys, flight of the conchords, hellogoodbye, pigeon detectives, the fratellis, the new pornographers, the shins. check those out for now, should do you good for about 3-6 months.
Jens Lekman! Field Music! Charlotte Heatherly! The Pipettes!
Sammy Davis Jr!
The New Christy Minstrels!
Lulu!
Tony! Toni!! Tone!!!
Drew, I hate oasis.
If you want GOOD music, take a quick look at Franz Ferdinand, Spoon, and Bloc Party
My personal choises:
Justice, Boys Noize, Chromeo, MSTRKRFT & M.I.A.
get some classic Van Halen on there! Van Halen 1 to start with.
Oh and Scott Matthews – Passing Stranger.
Thurston Moore. You’ll love it if you can find it.
Please check out:
One, Tina Dico
Walk on the Ocean, Toad the Wet Sprocket
Crazy on You, Heart
Driftwood, Travis
Violet Stars Happy Hunting, Janelle Monae
Road to Joy, Bright Eyes
Fear and Joy, Morcheeba
The Black Keys are a pretty cool rock duo to check out if you have not..
Someone already mentioned The National. Boxer and Alligator are fantastic and will change your life …. All kidding aside, (Matt) I will reimburse you in an iTunes gift card if you don’t like The Nationals album Alligator. I Promise!
Dude, I don’t know if you’ve heard of Blink-182 but their “Enema of the State” album KICKS ASS.
Funny you should list Band of Horses. They just came out with a great new album today, called cease to begin. If you are looking for something a little more rocking, check out the band “The Spill Canvas” or “Mute Math”.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart FTW
Check these bands out. You’ll surely find a new favorite or two in this list:
The Daysleepers- Hide Your Eyes, The Soft Attack
The Editors- An End Has a Start, The Back Room
Hammock- Kenotic, Raising Your Voice….Trying To Stop a Echo
Lowsunday- Elesgiem
Mercir- As Small as the Center, Windchimes & Landmines
Placebo- Without You I’m Nothing, Meds
Gotye.
Cog.
.hinge
Birds of Tokyo
sorry about the double post but the 3rd band there really is “.hinge” thats not a typo or anything… Their name includes the full stop.
Try Architecture In Helsinki ! At least for the name!
Why don’t you try that new Radiohead album. I hear it’s cheap if u want it to be.
Simply put, Jack Johnson.
Use Pandora.com. It is how I find music which is similar to the music I like… automatically. Put in your favorite bands (by the way… I love Imperial Teen and saw them a few years ago in a club so small in Portland, Oregon that the lead singer commented that he felt like he was playing in someone’s living room. He was standing about five feet in front of me and my girlfriend, eye ball to eye ball because the stage was six inches high… pretty funny) and it will come back with music that is similar. It isn’t some guy choosing the music similarities, it is actually done by checking various music parameters. It works great!!!!!!!!!!!
Kill Hannah!
She Wants Revenge
Some of the best indie rock going on
with a few exceptions, not many people seemed to have actually looked at your current collection…
my thoughts for you :
for the MBV side of beautiful noise : Film School, Mogwai, Mew, Serena-maneesh, Sigur Ros, the big sleep (free mp3s up on thebigsleep.net)
J&M chain: the obvious knockoff (but still good band) would be black rebel motorcycle club.
oh! i highly recommend the new hopewell record on teepee… great stuff
also definitely check out the new bat for lashes (bjorky-esque), editors (joy-div/interpolly) , hard-fi (clash meets…hmmmm jesus jones? hehe), and the new UNKLE which has everyone from ian astbury of the cult to josh homme of QOTSA on it
phew, thats enought for now.. .and, oh yeah… robert? kill hannah and SWR are NOT INDIE ROCK. dammit :)
Blonde Redhead
Giant Drag
Slowdive
Grandaddy
Lush
The latest Dinosaur Jr album was good, if you ever liked them, its more of the same.
Cold War Kids were okay, the one single is great, but the rest of the album lacks that power.
Silversun Pickups. I really loved Gish era Pumpkins. This has that feel and swaying heaviness.
The Postal Service is old news but it is still working for me.
Wolfmother is good fun. Rehash of Zep and Sabbath but today.
Amy Winehouse. Love her or hate her, ignore the drunken spectacle and dig the Motown sound again.
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Countless hours of covers of every genre into fun pop punk.
@ Marcus: Ha! Dandy Warhols, indeed. My old band toured with them in the late 90s on the west coast. That was an adventure.
@ Kook-aid man: A good friend of mine was the bass player for Blonde Redhead for awhile.
@ Everyone: Nice work. Most of it is stuff I already like to some degree, and very little stuff I don’t like, except Dinosaur Jr, but they were dicks to me once in a bowling alley, so screw them.
But really, I’m astounded at the amount of good taste in this thread. Being involved in the Seattle music community, I’m lucky enough to have decent exposure to good music, but there’s stuff in here I’d never heard of but now love. Hard-fi? Never heard of them, but holy crap they’re great.
Thanks to everyone!
welcome matt! glad yer diggin the hard-fi! :)
She Wants Revenge are adorable little pumpkinheads whose cheeks I would like to squeeze into the shapes of raw Pillsbury Crescent Rolls before I make them each heaping glasses of Ovaltine (I’ll even make it a double) before they go back upstairs to their rooms and write fake Joy Division songs about girls who cannot understand their fibrous and fractured souls, I am saying they’re freaking adorable little darlings.
But they are not indie.
Just caught up to this post in Google Reader. Don’t know if you’ll see this, but the answer is simple: KEXP’s Song of the Day podcast. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.
If you like what you’re hearing, just listen to John in the Morning every day. He’s the best DJ on the best radio station in the country, so why wouldn’t you?
