Beatles on iTunes: Finally

Let me start this off by stating a fact that somehow manages to shock people. That fact is this: I do not like the Beatles. I don’t get what the attraction is. If you’re over 45, then you were there when they were making history by making music, I get that. But for kids my age who were barely watching TV when Lennon was shot, I don’t understand. Many people have built on what the Beatles outlined and made stuff much, much better. So really, I’m saying if you’re freaking out about them for any reason other than nostalgia, you’re an idiot.
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s turn to all things Beatles and iTunes. Or, rather, the lack of the Beatles on iTunes. We’ve all been expecting a deal at some point or another, but nothing’s happened. But Paul’s on there, and John, and Ringo, and as of today, so is George (the only Beatle worth a damn). So there you have it, all four Beatles on iTunes. Sorta, kinda, in a fashion.
Whatever, I’m going to go download some Band of Horses.

Dude that’s messed up, The Beatles are good. I can’t even deal with that as a joke.

I agree with the editor, I don’t like Beatles. Beatles are for people who have grown up listening them.

So, Phenom, you’re saying that they’re for ANYONE who grew up listening to them? Say, for instance, I, a 26 year old woman in the year 2007, grew up listening to them. Then it’s okay for me to like the Beatles? If that is what you’re saying, then you are NOT agreeing with the blogger of this article. He’s saying that the Beatles are for people who were alive when they were still making music as the Beatles.

Eh, I don’t dislike the Beatles, but I just don’t care for 98% of their music either. So, I think my mindset about the Beatles being available on iTunes is probably on par with Matt’s. On the other hand, ian does manage to make a very thorough and thought provoking point that I will need to consider before passing my final judgement on this article.

the beatles’ music still has not been rivaled by any popular act. its alright if you have a bad taste in music, but please don’t try to project it on others.

Ok, wait a second, please. About the Beatles: I never said I hated them. I never said they weren’t good. I’m just saying I don’t get it. I’m just saying that they’re maybe not as good as some hardcore fans say. I’m not saying they’re unimportant: in fact, there’s no doubt they’re probably the most important rock band ever. Please don’t fly off the handle. I didn’t kill Santa Claus, I didn’t vote for Nixon, and I didn’t produce the TV series Cavemen. I just said I don’t understand the Beatles.

C’mon, folks … Matt’s entitled to his opinion (unlike all of us 45 and under Beatles fans. What a bunch of idiots.) :)

(In all seriousness, however, thanks for the heads up about George Harrison’s stuff being on iTunes, and Band of Horses is not TEH SUCK, or whatever the kids say nowadays.)

It is sad to see the Beatles get ragged on. Especially when Paul is still making great music. Check out Memory Almost Full from this year to see how great he is. He may be the “catchiest” tune writer ever. And I am only 34, so i grew up after the Beatles but certainly listened to them as a child.
If you dismiss the Beatles you might as well go listen to Brittney..

I go 50/50 on the Beatles catalog, but then I was raised on the stuff. About half I like, but I can’t stand Pauls bullshit (Rita Metermaid makes me wanna tear my ears off). But he also wrote “Yesterday” and I didn’t so, whatever. Also, who cares about the Beatles on Itunes? you’d think everyone that cared would already have those tracks.

The other thing with the Beatles is you need to listen to the “other songs”. That is, don’t get the best of stuff, listen to albums and understand the greatness that is the Beatles. Start with “Baby You’re a Rich Man” on Magical Mystery Tour.

The only problem I have is with the whole “idiot” comment. I know a lot of people my age (20) who can’t stand the Beatles, but I know just as many who love them (my stance). That’s like saying anyone who likes Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Crosby Stills Nash and Young (or any iteration thereof), Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, etc., is an idiot if they’re under 45. Those are all phenomenal music acts, as are the Beatles. Basically, what I’m saying is: why be hatin’?

I’m with Hickey here. I get what he’s saying: it’s not the same as it was then. They changed everything, true. But that was then, this is now (I know, the Monkees). So many bands (REM, Radiohead) have made more cutting edge music since then. Why do so many people close their minds taht maybe, just maybe, the Beatles aren’t taht great 30 years on?

Matt, I’m pretty sure you’ve figured out now that your “idiot” comment was not well placed. Just because you do not like a band, does not make their fans idiots. I’m pretty sure the countless millions of Beatles fans, like myself who is in his 20’s, would consider you the idiot. If you have any appreciation of what good music is (beyond liking it, liking N’SYNC doesn’t make it good) you would know the Beatles deserve every bit of hype they get. They will still be listened to much longer than you or I are around. Either way, all of us who are Beatles fans, I’m guessing, have every bit of their music already. It’s the new remasters we want to hear.
Btw, Band of Horses are a great band, check them out live if you get a chance…at least you have good taste in modern music.

Matt and I have had this discussion before: There are people who claim to hate the Beatles simply because it’s shocking and odd. Saying that you hate the Beatles is saying that you hate rock, jazz, blues, ballads, classical, and almost any other standard genre.
I’m not so concerned that someone claims to not understand the Beatles, but to claim that George is “the only Beatle worth a damn”? Ouch. Easy there, Mr. Hickey.
Craig (Who am I?)

Well, here’s my rambling discourse…
Though I have always admired your fearlessness and adeptness in confronting convention amongst the ‘open-minded’ and ‘free-thinkers’, there comes a point at which, when not beign able to appreciate something, we must simply plead ignorance - this case being one.
I back this up by pointing out that nearly every important musican or band - since The Beatles’ demise and even ones who got their start well before them (Ray Charles, Elvis, and various Motown musicians) - either sites them as a major influence or has an immense amount of love and respect for them musically, across virtually all musical and cultural boundaries.
So, I myself have had a difficult time digesting any work by Bob Dylan but seeing as how he’s had such a profound and lasting effect on so many musicians and artist that I respect and draw influence from personally, I essentially claim ignorance and will always be open to the possibility to one day sharing in and or at least understanding that level of fondness.
Now personally, I’m really only seriously fond of Rubber Soul and Revolver -quality seemed to fade later on as the members grew further and further apart, ultimately disolving that balance that was found between them in those earlier efforts. They seemed to be more at odds and in competition as opposed to colaborators. Their earliest work, although obviously plagued with sappy commercialism, still had a certain value that allowed it to surpass most pop music of the time and aside from Elvis, and the Stones, they were the only ones who could make a passable attempt at imitating their black musical idols.
George most certainly was not “the only Beatle worth a damn”. Again, this is a point I need not argue, as the value of John and Paul, both collectively and individually, is evident by not only (both recent and past) history’s most important musicians in word but also in deed; I can guarantee that most artist that you appreciate were seriously influnced at some point by their work - even Bland of Horses.
…I do find it curious though, that you make exceptions for fans who may have been around in their day - as if attaching personal, unrelated memories to, has any valid bearing on the quality of another’s art.
Hmm… because I always hated, as a musician, talking to older folk about a band that was around in *their* day, and hearing “yeah, I got laid for the first time to that song!” or “yeah, I used to get high and listen to that band with my friends” - thanks, here’s a quarter so you can find someone who could possibly give a flying fuck about your personal experiences connecting you to a band whos art you have no genuine appreciation for.

the beatles, the stones, jimi hendrix, led zepplin, does not matter what your generation if you can’t appreciate their music then you are incapable of appreciating music period. They are the Mozarts, Bachs, and Beethovens of our era. You probably don’t get Sinatra either.

Matt wrote: “I’m saying if you’re freaking out about them for any reason other than nostalgia, you’re an idiot.”
Then, Matt wrote: “Ok, wait a second, please. About the Beatles: I never said I hated them. I never said they weren’t good. I’m just saying I don’t get it.”
1) No comment claimed that you “hate” the Beatles before you posted your follow-on comment;
2) In your original post, you were not satisfied with stating that you “don’t get it.” You insisted on calling people who like the Beatles “idiots”.
3) You can’t have it both ways. You said what you said, and you can’t spin it around as if you did not try to jab other people;
4) You clearly do not have a taste for the Beatles … I don’t care why and I am not going to call you an idiot just because I do like the Beatles;
5) Maybe you should grow up and be an adult, namely, say what you mean, be accurate, and take responsibility for your mistakes.

What Jeff said.
No reason you can’t enjoy what you enjoy, but to be such as ass about it is just so much bull. These guys were bursting with talent. They succeeded not only on their own terms, but on many other levels as well.
Are you just jealous??????

Matt, you should know that nothing generates more responses than dissing the Beatles. By the way, listen to the white album and see if that changes your perception of them. It certainly did for me.
Matt Hickey (Who am I?)

@ greatslack: The White Album is actually my least favorite. With the exception of Back in the USSR, that song is amazing.

Sorry to do this Matt, but this whole amusing thread just reminds me of a quickly-paced, very funny exchange of dialogue you and I once had as you were passing by my barstool:
MH: Ewww, Bob Dylan.
PS: Huh?
MH: Ewww, Bob Dylan.
PS: Why don’t you like Bob Dylan?
MH: Too influential.
Funny thing is, I actually got your point, though I didn’t agree with it.

yo matt, i think what you said is just ridiculous. not liking the beatles? My god you cant actually be a human being. then you said your going to download band of horses!!!!! you were actually acting like they are better than the beatles. ok listen matt, when you come home from sugar plum fairy land in a flying bicycle, you can then tell me this horses band is better than the fabs. the other thing is that not all beatles fans are 45 and up. i know plenty of people including myself that admires the beatles. george the only beatle to care about. i just dont get that. george was great in his solo career, but so were paul and john. it seems to me taht you are just completely clueless. why any website would let you write an article about something you clearly could care less about is just unexplainable. that was a bad article.

What’s wrong with liking the Beatles AND modern music? I’m a lover of all types of music and I have the Beatles to thank for that, they got me into music. Yes, I grew up listening to them constantly (but I’m 25 not 45), and they’re one of my favorite bands ever. I don’t care if music has developed in the 40+ years since the Beatles came on to the scene, you’d expect it to wouldn’t you? That doesn’t make the Beatles any less relevant, musically or to me personally.
