Attention all Verizon Wireless customers: Read this now

Verizon Wireless customers have 30 days to opt-out of a controversial data-sharing initiative the wireless carrier is starting. The customer’s proprietary network information (CPNI) is basically the phone records of your mobile; it’s a detailed list of who you called, who called you, and how long you talked. It’s not the kind of information most people want floating around out there.

Verizon, though, is planning on sharing your information for marketing reasons with its partners. It’s nefarious, indeed, but at least the V is giving you a chance to opt-out, so it’s something. We recommend all Verizon Wireless customers call 1-800-333-9956 and ask the nice people not to share your phone records. If not for your own good, then on principle.

  • This is not the correct notice. This one is for Verizon DSL, not Verizon Wireless. But it is interesting to compare the two. The Verizon Wireless CPNI notice is a 12 page long leaflet that is far broader in scope.

  • Thank you! I’m getting tired of corporate America preying on my information and earning money from my life.

  • JD: You’re right, of course. Just the closest thing I could find whilst Google image-searching. :P

  • To opt out, you’ll need to provide your billing zip code and the last four digits of your SS#.

FYI, if you have a Family Share plan, make sure you opt out for all your numbers. After opting-out of the first number, press 2 and enter another number.

  • I just did the same for two phone numbers on the same call. For one number, it asked me the last 4 of SS# and the other number it asked me an a/c password (seems to be my vmail passwd)
