Maybe I’m alone on this one, but does anyone actually sit there with a group of people, connecting a device to an HDTV so everyone can view photos on a 42-inch screen? Do feel free to let me know if you do. For those of you who are into that sort of thing, Sony has announced a device that is sure to keep you from sleeping at night until its release.
The HDMS-S1D Digital Photo Album is a small little box from Sony that resembles a Drobo. It has a built-in 80GB hard drive for storing your photos and a variety of outputs such as HDMI, composite, component and S-Video so any TV you throw at it can display your pictures. You can load photos onto the device via a card reader, DVD/CD drive, USB or even Ethernet. There’s loads of software for playback and organization, so if you are a true photo aficionado, you’ll be pleased no doubt about it. Look for the HDMS-S1D later this month for $400.
After the jump, a picture of the back of the device.

Yes, I one time went to a friends house and he showed 15-20 photo’s he received from a mutual friend who had moved to another state. Displayed the photos on his 70″ big screen from a memory stick.
It made sense, and beat having to go to where the computer was, fire that up and then look at it on a 20″ screen.
Don’t know that I’d buy this product though.
Couldn’t you use this for more useful things like ripped dvd’s or music or something other than photos. I get that we are all becoming more digital but I don’t plan on not printing out pictures anytime soon.
You have to do this. How else to get guests to leave? I used to use a slide projector but that went to a yard sales years ago.
I do… But i use my Mac Mini for that!
Right. What do you think japanese people do to all the pictures they take when they travel abroad?
Don’t you think if they printed them all, we’d be much closer to global warming collapse by now?
yeah…. I’ll just stick to connecting my nice, small, sexy, doesn’t need a power power brick or fan… iPod! to the televisions of my unsuspecting friends and family. I mean really… yes I know it’s not as high res but this Sony thing (don’t get me wrong I love Sony- their dog is amazing) is just another dust collector that doesn’t even fit properly on my component rack.
I record my pics onto DVD and can using the zoom function on my digital camera whilst recording. Then they can be viewed by all on our 42″ TV
I think this device is pretty cool for people who want to see their photos on their hi-def 70″ lcd tv’s. We are all buying nice digital cameras only to look at our pictures on a small computer screen. Good to have if you have a big family or those with little ones.
When you have a 133 inches projector screen and a high definition (1080i) canon realis sx50 projector, this device is really outstanding. Nobody says grrr, meow or blurry with the image quality. Everybody says wow, amazing, pretty clear pictures and more compliments from your guests. By the way, I also use this on my 45 inches lcd tv with 1080i of resolution. It’s like watching high definition broadcasts from HD NET TELEVISION CHANNEL. Easier than a computer to set-up, very portable and user friendly.
The topic is quite curious, i must say
