What gadgets can’t you live without?

As most of you know, I’ve been traveling quite a bit in the last few weeks and it’s given me some time to really appreciate and/or miss certain toys of mine that didn’t make the final cut. Granted, I packed at the very last minute, which is typical of me, and probably the worst thing I could have done given the fact that I’ll be away from home for three weeks, but I managed to bring along the few gadgets that make life on the road bearable.

The most obvious choice and center of my universe (very sad) is my MacBook. It keeps me connected and allows me to work and bring you, folks, all the cool stuff I see along the way. My Western Digital Passport has been a life saver since my MacBook’s 60GB HDD is pretty much full and an extra 250GB of space is much appreciated. It’s small, lightweight and matches my Mac.

Then there’s my DSLR, Pentax K100D Super, with which I would not be able to record any memories or snag photos of exclusive scoops. It’s easy to use and a great entry-level DSLR since I’m a n00b. Which reminds me that there’s something super cool and special coming up tomorrow around 9:35AM PST.

The next device I can’t live without is my Helio Ocean. This keeps me connected whenever I’m AFK. It does everything I need and more. It’s the straight dope. Heh. And, of course, I wouldn’t be able to survive on the road sans music. Now, I’m the weirdo with both a Zune and iPod. My iPod is an earlier gen that only supports photos and holds up to 30GB of music. My Zune cranks out the TV shows and movies. I like to carry as many devices as possible. I don’t know why. It’s the most annoying thing, but it happens all the time.

What floats your boat? What do you HAVE to take with you when you travel? If you were on a deserted island and could only bring three gadgets (that would work no matter what, but wouldn’t be able to save you) what would they be?

  • iPhone. It’s my phone, ipod, web browser, camera, email client, contact manager, note taker, entertainment all in one device.

  • I really hate to follow that guy with this, but honest-to-god, it’s my Nokia N95. For the same reasons, actually, as that guy loves his iPhone. I won’t get into any comparisons, for the sake of your comments thread.

Actually, that and my Nokia N800. Phones are great for staying connected, but when I want a real web experience without having to squint, the N800 doesn’t disappoint.

  • Ever since I got my unlocked iphone, my creative zen vision m has been collecting dust at home. Sure it doesn’t have the same capacity but for listening to music, it holds its own in terms of sound quality and battery performance which is cruicial for a mp3 player. I tried watching a whole movie on that zen once and lets just say that I wouldn’t wish that on anybody. Whenever I travel to asia I just buy a sim card, pop it in, and i’m good to go. I also carry a sony dsc-t10 to take pics because there are no cell phones out there that has a camera with better performance than a standalone point and shoot. so why pay extra for a feature that’s only mediocre. If anybody knows of a cell phone with a better camera than most point and shoots, please let me know because i already have a cell phone with a better mp3 than most flash mp3 players out there.

  • Sorry to be a cop-out Apple fanboy, but I love my iPhone and my MacBook Pro.

  • My Roomba 535! I just got it today and it has surpassed my expectations! I love it!

  • I never thought I would say it but it must be Apple IPhone. I’m mostly what you call very much not an Apple fan boy (yet, I have a Mac amongst bunch of PCs…). I got IPhone 3 days ago. While it’s not perfect and while it has some usability issues (as a phone or as a device that needs to be operated with a single hand) I think it has a right set of features and very good information presentation paradigm. I hate to say it but I really like it.

  • My T-mobile Dash (HTC-Excalibur)is pretty much my lifeline.

  • Without wishing to sound like a stuck record.. my W800i. It’s old news, but with java apps for almost anything you can think of, including googlemaps, a compass, spreadsheets and a diary/scheduler app, (all free, btw), and throw in Opera Mini as well as a 4g memory card, and it’s the best phone, ipod, web browser, camera, email client, movie player, contact manager, note taker I’ve ever come across. To quote from above… :)

It’s seriously holding me back from upgrading to new and exciting tech, as I can’t find anything that will perform as well, with the same form factor. Mostly it’s the camera, as it just kills anything I’ve ever come across in a phone. Damn you, Sony Erricson – I want new toys!!!

  • after one year and a half of extensive travelling, I boiled down the essentials to my htc P3600 (for staying connected 24/7, gps navigation, geotagged photography, and last-resort music depot – when I really can’t carry anything else) and more recently my PSP, that finally allowed me to revive my long lost gaming addiction, and for movies… Oh, and the third, last but not least, my 2Gb Kingston pendrive! Sound silly? Well, since it’s powered with a Puppy Linux lightweight install, it’s really like a digital swiss army knife…

  • I can’t live without my Archos AV 400. I know, it old. The newer ones can do Internet and pdf reading but my AV 400 is every thing I need. It lets me watch my favorite series in the subway, it has all my music and the storage space is quite useful.
I also like a lot my nokia 6280. I know, it’s not as sexy as an iPhone or as a lot of devices out there, but thanks to opera mini and my new data plan, I can surf the web read my favorite blogs.

  • My SE p990 has my life on it. WiFi and 3G gives me great connectivity with activesync for my corporate email and running Google’s gmail java client I’m always online. QuickOffice lets me tweak my documents whilst listening to music on the 4G memory card.

The Opera browser is fantastic, my Nav4All software shows me how to get where I’m going and the business card scanner is the coolest (if not particularly useful) gismo to show off with.

Oh, and it’s a great phone too !!!!

  • well done :) i hope to see here even more good articles

  • I love my iPod Touch! It is so cool! I use it daily.

Also my brand new Macbook Pro is awesome!

I am slowly becoming an Apple Fan!

  • MacBook (tethered to Blackjack for 3G anywhere), iPod Shuffle, Zune, Canon Digital Rebel, Powershot S500, Samsung Black Carbon and flash drives galore.

  • I’ll nibble: Mac book, iPhone and a Nikon D200, !@#$@!$# iphone can’t shoot RAW or record GPS (yet). If I need to travel real light. iPhone and lecia D-LUX 3

  • My Treo 680 is my single gadget of choice.
Lacks Wi-Fi but does everything I need it to do.
Phone, audio/video player (with a 2gig SD card and the headphone adapter), check POP3 email and web email, take some poor quality pictures and video, surf the web slowly, alarm clock, address book, calendar, text messaging, blue tooth, some simple games to combat boredom.
Not all sexy like an Iphone, but works well.

  • Is it just me or does everyone else thing that Beau bringing his Roomba with him when he travels is perfect! I’ve heard about the anthropomorphic tendencies of Roomba owners but are you seriously thinking about cleaning your hotel room while you’re away. :) Too funny…. me, as long as I have my Zune, I’m happy. Unfortunately, I have to bring the electronic leash, so would bring the TMO Wing if traveling for work, and the HTC Touch if not.

  • My PSP for movies, my Shure earphones (yes i count them as a gadget, they were priced like one), and the Tilt.
