How does one make the world’s smallest color ADF scanner sexy? Well, you really can’t so I’m not going to try, but I did get a look at the Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 mobile scanner last week and it was pretty cool. It weighs about 3.1lbs and it may not be the tiniest device ever made, but it does a damn good job and makes scanning and storing files very easy. The ScanSnap’s ease of use reminded me of those late night infomercials for that rotisserie cooker where the motto was ‘set it and forget it’.

The S300 runs on AC or USB power but the latter tends to work at half speed, which wasn’t bad at all. I actually thought it was going pretty quick. Full color documents are scanned at 600 DPI and multiple user profiles for certain documents lets you multi-task while the S300 does its thing. This is aimed at the mobile professional who wants an easy to use device that leaves him/her without a bundle of cluttered paper, business cards and legal documents. Or someone who doesn’t have a lot of space for an all-in-one printer/scanner/fax machine that sucks at everything. It’s an all-in-one solution for under $300 and it ships November 21. Look for a full hands-on review next week.

  • It’s ultra mobile!!! Look you can fit it in your pocket with ease!

  • We have used scanners at my office for years. Our “high speed” models scan at 50 pages a minute.

We are looking for some to take on the road, that use a USB interface instead of a current SCSI card.

Any stats on black and white 300 DPI scans per minute?

    • The S300 scans at up to 8 pages per minute (16 images per minute if you scan in duplex mode) regardless if you scan in colour mode or black and white mode. The ScanSnap S510 is a similar product that scans at 18 pages per minute, but the S510 can not run on USB power like the S300.
