Charging an iPod with an onion and Gatorade

How do you do, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and teachers? My name is some guy with an iPod and an onion and physics is my business and our very special business for today is electrolytes and onions. Man, Julius Sumner Miller was the bomb.

[Thanks, James!]

That’s actually pretty cool. I imagine you could do that with any usb device as long as it doesn’t require a lot more energy than the iPod does.

How the hell does this work? There are 4 pins in usb, only 2 are for power…

Am I missing something here? I would imagine lemons or a potato would work much better.

I mean it sounds like the electrons would just be flowing all over the place, making this a horrible battery.

BWAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA. This is almost as good as the lantern battery / AA’s thing. I wonder how many people will end up angry with usb cables that smell like onions?

This is crap, in order to make a battery you need two different metals in an electrolyte solution. Look at the potato clocks, they use copper and zinc electrodes. All this would do is screw up your USB plug. Look in any general chemistry book if you doubt me.
