Not sure if it works... but i am sure that it doesnt ruin your cable due to the fact that the cable is sealed, stainless steel pins therefor it wont rust. Look at the potato clocks, they use copper and zinc electrodes. All this would do is screw up your USB plug. Look in any general chemistry book if you doubt me.
