Did he buy with credit? If they have the receipt, can't they track him down through that?

Used to work for a major cell phone vendor.

We got back a return with another companies phone in the box.

We got one back with the boards from another vendor in our housing. Factory test wanted to know why it wouldn't talk to the automated tester. The customer had removed the boards from some random cordless phone, broken them to make them fit in the housing, and put the housing back together. What they did with the correct boards, we never even had a good guess at.

Yes, in consumer electronics, the engineers actually do get involved in what's coming back through returns. Even huge, impersonal companies care about why things come back.
