by Peter Ha on November 26, 2007

Cali Lewis, gadgetress to the stars, is leading the charge to bring old fashioned fireplaces back to our phones, Xboxes, and PCs. That’s right, friends: Cali and Neil are selling an electronic Yule Log complete with calming music and HD flames. You can pop the file onto almost anything and they even sell a huge compendium of Yule Log video for $10.

Proceeds go to multiple charities including Heifer International. Ahem…

Heifer International is based on that whole “teach a man to fish” concept that transforms lives forever. It’s a charity that we feel comfortable supporting because their administrative overhead is low and their mission is simple.

They give families in poverty living animals that supply them with eggs, milk, meat and farming help for a lifetime. You can give a family a cow for $500. A sheep is $120, as is a goat. A flock of chicks is just $20.

That’s right. Your Yule Log will support goat farmers. It warms the cockles of my heart.

  • This is completely false. The proceeds do not goto Charity. Hopefully someone will call you on this and sue for this misrepresentation.

Only a portion of the proceeds will make it to charity and you can bet it will be a very very small portion.

Very poor form taking advantage of charities for financial gain.

  • I agree, this post emphasizes the charity, but I don’t think our Web site does. People are mentioning the charity thing in their blog posts, I guess because they see it as notable. I’m curious about what you think if you go to the Web site. The project has an experimental component and it has a charitable component, but the emphasis is on the commercial component.

I was raised to give 10% of everything to charity, so that’s what Neal and I will do. I don’t know what percentage the other two partners will give.

  • Thanks for the clarification, obviously somewhat late since most of the sales from the original post will likely have happened.

Commercially, I think it’s a fair experiment, the results will be somewhat skewed with the charity angle clearly influencing people that may not have otherwise bought a gimmick product.

I would be interested in seeing the original pitch to get coverage, it’s somewhat odd that so many are focusing on the charity side of this.
