It’s bad enough that my MacBook is running hotter than Hades since I upgraded to Leopard, but the last thing I need is for my HDD to crap out. Luckily my MB does not have a 2.5-inch drive from Seagate. Retrodata, a data recovery outfit in the UK, noticed something was amiss with the Seagate drive equipped MBs as they’ve seen 50 or so since last summer. Upon further inspection, Retrodata pinpointed the cause to be:
the head in the drive becomes detached from the read/write arms, causing the latter to “gouge deep scratches” in the disk. Unless the user shuts off the computer immediately, then the damage can be so severe that data recovery is impossible.
Apple spokesman Cameron Craig had this to say,
We’ve received a few reports that some MacBook consumer notebooks may have hard drive issues, and we’re looking into it.
If you have a MB then I’d check the Revision under S-ATA in system profiler to make sure it doesn’t read 7.01. If it does then back that up and get a new drive.
Seagate’s MacBook Hard Drive Destroying Data [Info Week]

Seagate has Data Recovery services. Isn’t it a time for Seagate take responcibility for quality of hard drives and offer data recovery for free.
Data Recovery from Seagate costs around $1800. They made huge proffit from any failed hard drive. Situation looks like: more bad hard drives – more proffit for Seagate.
my macbook has crashed twice last night, while never having done that ever before… Maybe its leopard? I dunno, better check the HD tonight.
Don’t blame just Seagate or other Hard Drive manufacturers.
APPLE designs their Laptops with the most cramped space imaginable… They figure they will sell more if their gear LOOKS GOOD vs. performs well under realistic conditions (Laptop sitting on your bed or carpet while you work… in hot climate areas; or surviving you trekking it around in your flimsy computer bag, etc.. Man, I could go on! :)
HEAT!!! will destroy your drive! DON’T BUY anything “LaCie” makes. This is not SLANDER! This is FACT!!! Recovering Data off of LaCie Hard Disk Drives make people like me RICH! But I’d rather save a Doctor’s or Scientist’s life long work from being destroyed instead of them making me rich by recovering their Data. KARMA IS KEY! These guys may some day save our lives.
I’ll give a 50% Discount for Research Scientists / Engineers or Select Charities (that past my approval process).
The most impressive thing I have ever scene is seeing a DELL Laptop take a fall down 2 flights of Loooong stairs (30 foot drop)… and everything still worked except for the LCD Screen which cracked (most important the Hard Drive survived). I kid you not!
I’m an Electronics Engineers that knows design and I have to say their Motherboards are well built!! They use a lot of American company parts, not the SMT China stuff you (sadly) see on HP and the likes.
Parts on HP Laptops are extremely difficult to identify and replace. Try identifying an SMT Transistor with no Company logo and “3″ as a part number lol. You basically have to buy a new motherboard and hope that that one doesn’t fail.
I DO REAL DATA RECOVERY ON ANYTHING THAT HAS DATA STORED ON IT.
Back your stuff up folks!!! Learn how to Backup and make sure they are Realistic Backups (a.k.a Recovery CDs/DVDs that actually work.
DO NOT BACK UP ON DVD/CD or BLUE RAY. Ever done a CRC/ MD5 Verification Check on them after a backup? :) give it a try lol that’ll make your hair stand up after you deleted the originals of your wedding Videos; that UFO encounter and the Alien dinner party that followed in your living room.
Use Reliable well known External Hard Drives to back your stuff up and treat it like an EGG. Anything that will cook or crack an EGG could damage your Hard Drive. If you got a Carpet or a lot or Static in you place don’t touch the Hard Drive’s Connectors until you Ground yourself first and get rid off your static charge.
GOOD LUCK
Jay
