It’s official: exactly one half of the Earth’s population is taking it up the tailpipe from cellphone companies. 3.3 billion mobile phone lines are currently being used, which comes out to roughly one phone line per every other person on the planet. Considering that twenty years ago only 35 countries had any form of mobile network, it’s an amazing growth rate. Today every country on the globe has some form of mobile phone service, 194 nations each with its own networks. Forget the Internet, the mobile revolution is far more important.

  • Wow… I didn’t realize that 50% of the Earths population was made up of lemmings.

  • The photograph that accompanies the article — is that Sapa, Vietnam? If it’s not, those people dress very much the same. I didn’t see any umbrellas or cell phones when I was there three years ago, but just about every home had a tv and dvd player. Even the ones who powered them off batteries charged by mountain water turning a generator.

Thanks for the nostalgia, but I have to go… my cell phone’s ringing.

  • The Italians and Greeks are skewing these numbers, because they have an average of 4 cell phones per person. :)
