LG Venus review

I must warn you that this will be the shortest review of a phone we’ve ever done at CrunchGear. Why you may ask? Because we’ve already covered it extensively and filled you in on the specs. So I’m really only going to cover the touch interface and voice quality. That’s all there really is to write about. No need to get into the Verizon features as they haven’t changed.

Despite the feminine name the LG Venus is not just a shiny accessory for women. It’s a feature rich phone offered by Verizon with a unique touch screen interface that can be deceiving as it only uses the lower half of the screen. Slide up to reveal a 12-key pad, though, I doubt you’d be using it very much. The touch interface has haptic feedback and the menus change as you delve deeper into sub-menus. It’s nothing ground breaking, but a cool feature nonetheless, though, you can sweep through menus by sliding your finger up or down.

How’s the voice quality? Better than the Voyager, which wasn’t too bad.

Ok, I lied. I’ll touch on a few things other than voice quality and the touch screen.

The 2-megapixel camera is average and the microSD slot allows you to cram as much music as possible. I did not like that the speaker was placed on the back because who really wants to hold their phone to hear music or put that glossy glass screen face down? I suppose you can just stream your tunes over Bluetooth, but that entails you looking like a tool unless you have BT speakers.

The Venus is available now for $199.99.

Feature-rich? Not really.

The Venus is a good phone, yes. But it’s nothing special.

People are already complaining about the touchscreen. A phone without a QWERTY is pretty much useless nowadays. I’ve heard that it’s too small to use comfortably.

I’ll stick with the BlackBerry…

To me a phone is for calling. no need for Qwerty. useless..for a person who lives inside a box and doesn’t think of others then maybe. There are many of us that think Qwerty is useless.

I work with many professionals and attend school, news flash phones are for much more than calling these days and have been for a while,
I store User ID’s (I don’t like to put passwords just in case is my paranoia,) I am able to maintain my very complex calander, play and store music, get directions,
check weather updates between shifts, take pictures of diagrams to study for my next exam (and see them clearly.)

These are NECSSARY utilizations of technology and are valuable for those who are active and have little time and a large need.
My co-workers and fellow students do not live in a “box,” we don’t want to carry 15 lbs of hardware with us if a fashionable/convient, viable device like the venus can provide all of the same tools and weighs a few onces.
I recieved one a few days ago, it is amazing, I don’t know what I did before I revieced it (O weight - that’s right rumage my back pack for my Ipod, my PDA and my Phone… what a waist of time and space…)

I am disapointed about the data convesion time to upload the external chip with info, but the sync to transfer phone numbers and while it should have a flash, it still takes very clear and beuatiful pictures. love the vibrating touch screen because it will also prevent you from pressing the buttons too hard… I am and old school texter so I didn’t go for the voyager like my brother-in-law, The Venus has everything I need and I am extremely happy with it. I am concerned about the 8G memory card issue but by the time I get one I am sure it will be cleared up.

Yes it’s true that a QWERTY keyboard is so much more useful but actually if you were texting all day, a normal keypad would be sufficient. I used to have the enV but then i learned how to text with T9 while it was closed and now i’m so much faster texting with it closed. So I guess it’s just one of those things that you learn to get used to. I wasn’t used to the applications closing when I slid the screen back down (since the enV keeps it open when you close it) but I’m used to it now.

And the keypad is just as big as any other phone. It looks hard to press but the keys actually pop out a little you so you can easily press them.

You’ve heard that its too small? So therefore you have never even held the phone yet are qualified to review it?

my venus is now in 2 parts… how do i fix that?

tealfan (Who am I?)

Yeah what’s up with LG putting speakers on the back? All they have to do is put 1-2 tiny holes on the front like the PSP did.

Also some major bugs. It supports an 8 GB chip but the music sync will only recognize HALF the chip capacity. The memory function on the phone shows 8 GB, in a card reader, Windows reads it as 8 GB. Connect the phone to the computer with the included USB cable and then Windows sees it as 4 GB and you get “device full” after about 3.6 GB. After jumping through hoops trying to get Verizon Tech Support to understand that it is a problem and finally giving up. I finally talked to LG directly. They have confirmed that this is a known issue with not only the Venus but the Voyager also. They are working on a fix but no idea when it will be ready.

There are already things on the phone that take up some of the space thats why you don’t have the full 4 GB to put stuff on. Its the same with anything that has memory like a computer. The 4GB includes preprogrammed things and other pieces of hardware/software.

I just received the LG Venus as a gift, and I am already used to the touch screen. Also, with the speaker on the back, you really cannot tell much of a difference and you do not have to sit it down screen first. With the camera though, it has a good 2.0 mega-pixel one, but it does not have a flash, which is a tad bit odd. Other than that one thing, the phone is great for everyone.

I have the Venus and I love it. I also handled the Voyager. Between the two phones I would definatly give my vote to the Venus. The voyager is big and the touch screen has prooven to die fast and is useless after awhile. But the Venus’s touch screen stands up much better. The venus is definatly a phone looking for a nice stylish phone for the person on the go.

I am not a fan of the Venus. I had the phone for 3 weeks and I had the following problems: When sliding the phone open it would not slide back flush. Using the keys for texting…the software would hang up and not space without being forced. I received a placement phone. The replacement phone had the SAME problems with texting. I just received my 2nd replacement phone. Went to program it and the #8 key doesn’t work. I have no phone now and need to go to the Verizon store.

I’ve had my phone for 3 weeks too!! and it just started not letting me put spaces in my texts. it freezes everytime i try. and it also randomly turns the writing orange, won’t save words i add with t9, freezes when i try adding a contact. did they figure anything out to help you??

no image
Michelle (Who am I?)

The exact thing happened to me! The writing in texts turned orange and it would not auto-advance to the next letter. I got a replacement phone last night and while i was driving home, I saw that my replacement phone’s screen was upside down and backwards!!! It is still like that so now, i have to go back AGAIN tomorrow to get a THIRD VENUS….i love the phone, if i could get one that ACTUALLY worked…

Allison (Who am I?)

the same is happening with my texting. when i use T9 and try to put a space the phone freezes every time and i have to take the battery out and put it back in. what did you do about it? did you send in for a new phone? and if so did you have to pay for it?

no image
melissa (Who am I?)

did you ever figure this one out?? this just happened to me like 10 minutes ago and every time i turn it off and try again it does the same thing. grrr!

I have a Venus and I love it!!! But I do have one problem, the zoom on the camera doesn’t work. I took it to the Verizon store and the tech tried to update the software but it still didn’t work. We tried the Venus that was on display and guess what??? The zoom for the camera didn’t work on it either. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Anonymous

I’ve had mine for over a month and it works but it doesn’t soom in very much or out that much but it does zoom enough to make a differnce in the picture, it is also very touchy when you are hitting the button to soom it takes a second or to to acturally zoom… sorry to hear you are having a problem… o there is a night mode since it doesnt have a flash that works pretty well also… Have a great day

no image
Megan (Who am I?)

Use the volume key thats what works for the zoom.

no image
Mark (Who am I?)

You probably have the resolution at the highest setting. Change it to a lower setting and the zoom will work fine

jess

yeah, i had that problem

put i switched the size of the pic.

then it worked.

tj

This is the WORST phone I have ever had! I’d really rather have my old nokia brick phone from back in the day than this phone! The screen bright and clear but thats where the quality stops. The camara is okay, IF you can wait the 2-3 seconds it takes to capture the image when you push the button. (or else you get a blurry image) Touch screen is not great but you can get use to it. But the battery life is the worst Ive ever had! If I dont charge it every night, I wont have a phone in the morning! None of my other phones have been like that. Also with this phone, about half my phone calls the ringer dosent go off, until the “missed call” tone goes off. And I know im not the only one with that problem. I LOVED LG phones until this one. BAD move LG!

tj is wrong (Who am I?)

You obviously did something wrong with your battery tj. I have had the phone since it came out in early december, i text with it maybe 30 times a day and i talk for maybe 20 minutes, and my battery still lasts me 2-4 days. Maybe you just kept it on the charger for too long

All phones have their glitches. There is no such thing as a perfect phone. I think the Venus is the closest you can get. The touch screen is great and I love the sliding feature. I don’t see why some of you guys don’t like it.

Man screw that the Venus is straight up sexy. It looks cool feels cool. and I add, NO PHONE is perfect. so HOP OFF.

Venus phone wont resolve pics when zoomed. Tried changing the setting and still digital garbage. I also think the functions are too slow. Maybe in another few years…

matt

worst phone i have never had in my entire life. its may now and since the end of december when i originally got the phone i am on my fifth one. the phone just keeps freezing. i cant go through the menu, i cant send messages, i cant do anything on the phone without it freezing. its horrible and they said it was a batch of phones. thats BS i have gone through a phone a month due to the fact that it keeps freezing. worst phone ever horrible experience

Bronwyn (Who am I?)

I’ve never had a phone before but I’m about to get one. My friend has the Venus and I really like it. She loves it. I’m really leaning toward getting it. I really like the LG Rumor but thats Sprint and I want Verizon. I thought I liked the Glyde but I tried it at the store and it was not what I expected. I’ve read a lot of good things about the Venus but also a lot of bad. Should I get the Venus? Or does anyone have any other phones to suggest?

I have had a total of 6 Venus phones malfunction on me (since march) i am currently attempting a 7th and praying this one works out. I Love the phone and other than the problems i have had it has been wonderful i hope that this one will finally keep working. The LG Dare looks pretty awesome though.

It simply comes down to this… the Venus SUCKS!!!!!!! I have had to have a replacement 3 times because of the numbers not working, it cutting off on me, the battery power, etc. These things are EXACTLY why I or anyone else gets a cell phone in the first place. We won’t it to work and to last. The duribility of the phone is CRAP!!! It’s pretty sad when a phone that would be free (with activation) has a better lifespan than the Venus that costs hundreds of dollars.

Chase (Who am I?)

I’m very surprised. Lots of negative reviews. I have it and have had it since it cam out. Love it. It works so perfectly for me. The phone isn’t meant to be really durable? If you a durable phone than get one set to be like that. This one is more for functionality and style. And the battery power has been tested to be longer lasting than the iPhone. When it comes down to it, the Venus is a wonderful phone.

I don’t get the complaint’s either, I’ve had my phone (THE ORIGINAL PHONE NOT A REPLACEMENT) since January…
I have great service I surf the net, text, take pictures, use it as a primary phone, have over 100 phone number stored in it play games all the time… It hasn’t broke once, the pictures are crisp… Heck I paniced when on memorial day when i accidentally got it wet and thought “O’ NO I RUINED IT,” nope dryed it out the rest of the day it works the same as always….
I’m even ashamed to say I have dropped it a few times… nothing happened to it When I bought it I bought the new body glove case and so it braces it from impact I guess…

My phone is fantastic, I use it way more than I should, I listen to music all day a work on it too. (I plug it in at my desk and have the Jaba bluetooth dog tag head set so I can be mobile and still have an ear open for calls…

This is the newest phone I’ve ever owned in my 10 years of cell phones, it is the most gadgety and the nicest. I’m glad I went a head a spoiled myself this is the best gift I ever gave myself and I couldn’t be happier.

So to all the complainers, BBBBbbbblllllllllllllllll………

im on my 5th venus(three in four months), and goin today for my sixth, cuz of the whole t9 spacing issue. not realy sure if they’ve fixed that yet, but i love the phone other than that!

Brianna (Who am I?)

Im on my second replacement phone soon to be third. I do actually really like the phone if it wasn’t for the issues. It takes awesome pictures, sound comes out really well, holds lots of memory, love the half touch screen thing since i can actually get to things and not be screwed if the screen freezes. I have had the same problem with both phones. I got the first in November when the first came out and recieved the replacement in May. The phone when unlocked would bounce around to many different programs and and call random people. It would dial many number uncontrollable whether the keypad was opened or not. Basically it ran like a video game. If LG did a recall and fixed the quirks, this phone would be perfect.

i got my venus not too long ago and the same thing is happening with the texting, when i have it on word and try to put a space, it freezes. it really upsets me because i really like the venus and dont want to get another phone.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: STOP READING ABOUT THE VENUS, FORGET YOU EVER HEARD OF IT, AND-UNDER NO CONDITIONS- SHOULD YOU EVEN CONSIDER THROWING YOUR MONEY AWAY ON IT!!!!
i never write reviews of any products that I buy, but this phone’s quality is so appalling that I have to. I have had numerous cell phones over the past 8 years, I am a total gadget freak and i love nothing more than a brand new sleak-looking high tech gadget. well, this phone has crushed my desire for advanced technology because it SUCKS! i have never had to replace a phone & kept all of mine for at least a year before buying a new one. i have had this since November, and have hated it since December. The touch screen freezes, it’s always smudgy and gross-looking, the camera doesn’t work, i can’t send texts. trust me, the allure of its sleak look dies after about 2 weeks.
just save yourself the time and energy, and avoid this phone- PLEASE.
