Watch out Apple, Creative just dropped a bomb
by Peter Ha on December 3, 2007

I’m not saying people will be rushing to pick up a Zen or anything, but it should be noted that Creative has announced the world’s first flash-based 32GB PMP and it’s the size of a CC. What else does $378 get you? That’s not a type typo, either, it’s $378. That’s cheap. Super cheap for 32GB of flash memory. A 2.5-inch display, 30 hours of music playback, five hours of video playback and an SD card slot. Holy balls! Could the 32GB iPod Touch be on its way? Maybe, just maybe, at MacWorld in January? Please say it’s true, Apple.

  • I know you guys hate it when people point out errors, but I do think you misspelled “typo” in this one and it kind of made me chuckle

  • Doesn’t make any sense to me when a nokia N800 can do this and is a computer for almost half the price, not to mention a big enough screen to actually use.

  • Nokia N800 — much shorter battery life, far less memory, and the Amazon.com price is $399 which is far from half the price. So I’d argue that this offering from Creative Labs is pretty darn amazing.

I’m a bit torn about losing the widescreen display that the Touch and other systems have but I’d assume that Creative makes it much easier to get video onto their player than Apple does. (Err and I’m an iPod fanboy so sue me :P )

  • I can vouch for the interface of this at least - I’ve got the 8GB version, and it is nice. Not as many features as the iTouch (most notably, lack of a touch screen :-P), however, this thing will run Divx and Xvid encoded videos and they’re totally watchable (i.e. the screen isn’t too small). I think it even plays iTunes+ songs. Plus the SD slot is incredibly useful.
Nice to see a little Creative respect in these parts.

  • Hot. Divx/Xvid support is pretty sweet.

  • Not to rain on their parade, but I think this will be like dropping a pebble down a well. Two years ago it could have been big news. Now you’d need something paper thin to make a splash. Actually, the next huge splash in the market will be built in projectors. In a box the size of an iPod Classic you’ll have a built in projector that will project a ~20 inch diagonal movie onto a nearby screen. Not that Creative made a bad product but they’ll need that much differentiation to get attention in this market.
