I agree about the iPod’s scroll wheel. I always miss my intended selection with my current 5th gen, the original was spot on.
However for small devices with a lot of functions, a touch screen is needed. The iPhone/iPod Touch have improved on the usual PDA touch screen a great deal by throwing away the need for a stylus.

Unreasonable dude. I LOVE me some buttons, but browsing sucks with buttons after using the iphone. Everything else requires buttons tho.

It’s a big world out there. Plenty of room for buttons AND touchscreens.

And I think you missed the principal benefit of touchscreens – they can replace mouses (mice?), not just buttons like on the iPhone.
